I'd say upon Wind Waker's release (and for a couple years after), Zelda fans offered the most unintelligible, unconstructive criticism they could've ever gave. Yes Wind Waker had it's other flaws but as the OP said, the focus the fans had on the art style caused Nintendo to pay too much...

This is a ridiculous argument, it would be an issue in Zelda if all of the female characters were treated like they are in games such as DoA or SoulCalibur, but its not the case.
