I just got to play the original Zelda on an actual NES for the first time.

Ah, just had a flashback of reaching the final world in Super Mario Brothers 2 and leaving the game paused because we had to go out, worried someone would touch it while I was gone. That was the NES experience right there.

    Favorite/Least Favorite Zelda Games

Interesting you put A Link to the Past as your least favorite game, since it is typically so beloved. I'm curious on your reasons for feeling that way.

    Favorite/Least Favorite Zelda Games

I too find PH and ST to be weaker entries. Out of curiosity, what did your friend say to help you see the games in a different light?

Is the reliance on Cel Shading dampening series sales?

And long may it continue! I love the Zelda games because of what they are. Changing the games to look like other games? On one side would be cries of "selling out" and on the other side cries of "too little, too late."

    Calatia

Proud might not be the word, but many at Nintendo may be simply unaware something like this exists. They are not fans, like us.

    Hyrule Warriors ALBW DLC!

They are fun characters. I prefer Radio and his hammer. Is this the end of the DLC? The end of an era?

    Zelda Manga

I was a subscriber of Nintendo Power when that comic was running. Fond memory. I was wondering if my memory is cheating, so it is nice to hear it still holds up. I really should get that book version.

    Introducing someone to the series

I think A Link to the Past is the best intro. It is widely considered one of the best games of all time. It is also in a way a suped-upped remake of Zelda 1. I love the original 2 NES games, but I recognize they are not terribly accessible to gamers with modern sensibilities. So A Link to the...

Wait... was that seriously a real ad?

Would/has anybody name/named their kids Link or Zelda?

Zelda is an uncommon, but not unheard of name. Is the name so associated with the video game that it would be hard to name a child Zelda without many people assuming a connection? I've known several Marios, but in my adult life, and have never thought Super. But would a kid growing up now...

Is spirit tracks worth my time?

I think it is worth playing. The quirks of the touchscreen interface from Phantom Hourglass are worked out here, I felt. The train aspect is a unique element of the Zelda lore you only find here, too. It's not for everyone's tastes, but nothing is, really.
  12. Z

I say 'video game' you say...

I actually thought PacMan. That was the first thing that popped into my mind, which sort of surprised me. I think PacMan must be a placeholder in my mind for video games as a piece of technology. I associate Mario, Sonic, etc with specific companies and marketing.

    Nintendo Classic Mini

I hadn't considered that as a selling point, but you are right. I almost want to take back what I said before about this not being for us. It might be worth it for the controller. Actually I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't come out with an NES controller for the modern consoles - or at least an...

    What is "Hylian?"

I mostly agree with this. I think the Hylians at least see themselves as descendants of their goddess Hylia - perhaps they aren't literally. In the same way the Romans believed they were descendants of Mars. Their name shows a belief in some sort of covenant relationship with their goddess -...

Name the best Zelda related songs!

Hands down my favourite. I have a personal story about that, too. Used to play that song for my kids when they were toddlers all the time. They still call the Zelda games "Link save the day" because of this - as in, "Oh, are you playing LinkSaveTheDay now?" I'm not sure if they even realize why...

Hyrule Warriors Biggest Improvements from SS to HW?

I suppose the point Time's Quill and I are trying to make is that comparisons can be made, at least from our point of view. The fact they are different invites comparison. Yes, I certainly acknowledge that Hyrule Warriors is not a sequel to Skyward Sword. What we see is that Skyward Sword...

She's just fierce! Look at that! Go girl!

Does anybody else find the Zelda cartoon to be really funny?

I watched it as a kid when it originally aired. Loved it, along with the Mario cartoon, in a nonironic way. Good fun for kids.

So, what exactly do you mean by Link's "reincarnation?"

My sense is that every Link is unique and typically unconnected to each other - not reincarnated or anything. But there does appear to be some supernatural "chosen one" thing that is common in fantasy literature. So every time evil rises, some supernatural forces chooses a boy of courage to take...

Breath of the Wild Humans or creatures?

One of the highlights for the Zelda games for me are the human villages, which I suppose started back in Zelda 2. I think the outer world should be wild and dangerous and filled with creatures, so reaching a village provides for a respite.

If You Fail at a Grand Goal of Life, Should You Quit?

@Chocolate Storm I'm sorry your father seems unhappy. We place a lot of our identities in what we do for a living. (Whenever we're at a party, the first question asked by strangers tends to be "What do you do?" It is how we often define ourselves.) It is hard not to measure our success in life...

They are a lot of fun. I don't buy a lot of merchandise, but I'm glad I have these. They won't change your life, but they're good for a lazy Sunday.

    Favourite Zelda advertisement

I genuinely enjoy "the Legend of Zelda is really rad" rap commercial from bygone days. I know it is seen as some sort of cringeworthy ironic thing now, but I remember it fondly.

    Returning To Old Dungeons

An intriguing idea. Since time travel plays a role in the Zelda world a fun idea (if not too meta) could be in a modern game to travel into the 8bit world of the original Zelda, if only for a short time. Getting through the dungeon with all the new items that have been developed since Zelda 1...

Hyrule Warriors Biggest Improvements from SS to HW?

I totally agree. I see no objective reason to dismiss HW as any less a Zelda game than Adventure of Link is if the issue is just game mechanics.

Nintendo Nintendo HANDHELDS vs TV CONSOLES

Grew up with an NES and a Gameboy. I always saw the Gameboy as a supplemental thing, for some reason. Real games were on the console.

    Opinions on Midna?

She's the best of the "companion" characters. I agree with what most people are saying - she's a unique character who changes from who she is at the beginning to the end.

the impact of an original handheld 3d title

I'm actually surprised it hasn't happened yet. I would think making OoT and MM for the 3ds means there's already some sort of game engine left over from those ports. It seems to me that most of the "heavy lifting" programming would be done.
  29. Z

    Any programmers here?

I was always making text games way back when I was a kid in BASIC. Learned QBASIC and VisualBASIC. Took a class on Pascal. These languages are deader than Latin now, I suppose.

Definitely Minish Cap. Such a great game, but far too short. I don't recall there being any side quests, although I may be misremembering.

    Wii U vs. Switch

WiiU owner here. Actually kind of relieved at not getting the Switch hype. Not planning on buying. I've mentioned in other threads that I don't consider myself a gamer - I only play Zelda. Maybe that's weird, but that's me. My wife likes video games, so I will play a few other things with her...

TPHD-Wii U Was TP HD in need for a remake for the wii u?

I didn't buy it, but it was probably necessary. I recently got back into Zelda after falling away with the SNES. I've had to look around to collect the games I've missed. From what I'd read, it seemed the GameCube version of TP was the superior version, so I set out to find a copy. Of all the...

    Favorite/Least Favorite Zelda Games

That's a great point, especially since I would rank FSA as probably in competition for my top spot. I love FSA. (The original FS I liked, but don't judge by the same measurement - to me it's really an "extra feature" to A Link to the Past) FSA returns us to the world of Link to the Past, which...

Hyrule Warriors Favorite Hyrule Warriors Character Skins?

It's funny, but we haven't looked at the costumes in months. Just yesterday (we've gotten back into the game recently) we decided to look through the costumes and mix them up a little bit. We don't really have favorites, but the Link postman is good for a laugh. My little kids always want that...

That One Show Everyone Loves But You Hated

I would go so far as to call Family Guy an abomination. Utterly without merit. Hateful and disgusting. I did try to find some value in it, because it was a legitimate phenomenon, and that usually means there is something there, even if I don't immediately see it. I still don't see it.
  37. Z

That One Show Everyone Loves But You Hated

Not exactly hated, but I could never get into Lost. On paper, it's the kind of show that was made for me. When it was on, people who knew me even slightly would recommend it to me as something I would clearly love. For some reason, it just never clicked with me.
  38. Z

    Nintendo Classic Mini

Exactly. This is the kind of product that is designed to be a gift. There are products like that. I'm sure there's some fancy term in economics for it. You are not supposed to buy this for yourself. You buy this for your dad, because it will make for a fun Christmas gift and is better than a...

A Link Between Worlds - Underappreciated?

Perhaps the fact it is a literal sequel in the way most Zeldas aren't means it doesn't immediately come to mind as being a distinct installment when people make those top 10 lists or whatever. It reminds me a little of Phantom Hourglass's relationship with Wind Waker. Wind Waker is "the one on...

Nintendo Switch News and Discussion Thread

Oh, yeah. I totally get that. It's not an objective criticism - I know I'm not the target market anymore, but it still makes me sad. I suppose the problem with catering to "casual anything" is that by the very nature of our casual investment, we're just not going to spend a lot. Catering to a...

    Hyrule Warriors Training Dojo

I suppose it eventually becomes impractical, though. I think the designers did a good job making it so it is relatively cheap to raise up low-level characters, but it becomes less so with higher ranked people. Eventually it takes less time to manually level up than it does to earn enough money...

Nintendo Switch News and Discussion Thread

@DarkestLink I agree with you and had the same thoughts. Stop playing basketball to play fake basketball? Strange. The Wii was attractive to me as a non-gamer because it was marketed as a family "together" device. I think that was a huge impact in its success for people like me who had...

What is you favourite glitch you've performed in a Zelda game?

Does the crouching in the corner to defeat Dark Link in Zelda 2 count as a glitch? Before the internet I thought this was just a strategy to win. I knew how to do this, so I must have read it in one of those video game strategy books or something. I honestly don't remember, but I'm sure I didn't...

Possibly. Are you thinking they will remake WiiU games to offset the fact the WiiU didn't sell well?

Spoiler Cows on the ranch in MM

Perhaps. I suppose what makes this a bridge too far for me was the fact that they aren't angels or demons, but clearly aliens in a sci-fi sense. I had the same issue with the trains in Spirit Tracks. There's nothing objectively wrong with either, but they were both a bit too divorced from the...

    Mobile Zelda?

It's probably inevitable that dedicated gaming devices will disappear sometime in our lifetimes. All-in-one media devices have combined TV, radio, phone, music player, camera, internet access, etc. already. Phones aren't powerful enough yet, but it's only a matter of time.
  48. Z

    How do you discovered zelda?

Probably for the best. I did see it in theaters and remember liking it - but I've never seen it since. I assume it is actually quite terrible, so it is probably best left in my mind as a cloudy childhood memory. I'm sure Captain N is still awesome though.

The end of an art style

I respectfully disagree. It seems to me that there is no reason to believe the "Toon style" isn't anything other than a genuine artistic choice made by the game creators that choose to use that style.

Hyrule Warriors Biggest Improvements from SS to HW?

There's definitely an expectation that the player is vaguely familiar with Skyward Sword while playing. Twilight Princess also. I don't think this game would have much appeal to people who hasn't played those games.
