The problem I have with nowadays pop music is that it all sound alike. There is not an own sound anymore. It is like everybody tries to copy each other and mimic their moves. Yes I may sound oldfashioned and maybe I am but if I compare today's music to the sound of the 70's and 80's I prefer the latter. The sound was better and at least there were more clips which were videoclips. Not a bunch of moaning and something they like to call dancing girls. Now it sounds too much like it is from the same company. I dont say I don't listen to pop music but I won't get thrills like I used to do

Not all pop music is that way and some of what I listen to (that I know you also listen to ;)) has talk about drugs, sex, and breakups. Owl City writes love songs that are about going the distance for someone he loves. I find it to be quite moving and hopeful.
Notice I used the word 'most of'. I didn't say ALL music was about drugs, sex or stupid breakups. I'll admit sometimes i'll listen to a pop song once in a while. But that's because sometimes I'm just in a strange mood (that's the case with about 3/4's of my songs xD)

I agree with almost all of the comments. The newer artists today aren't even trying to make good music anymore. (I'll give you a good example: Pitbull)

Hopefully this helps in clarifying the specific types that I listed in my last sentence.

Alright. I'm not picking a fight, just saying that I don't like most types of pop music. Some of it (not very much, though) is pretty good c:

I am the antithesis of pop. I despise its over-simplicity and commercialism. I make an effort to deride as many pop "musicians" and fans as I can as often as I can. And I don't just hate modern pop either (Although I may hate it most, if only because of Lady Gaga and her stupid nonsense), I hate pop from all eras. I hate Michael Jackson, Madonna, Elton John, Hugh Grant from that crappy movie he did with Drew Barrymore (you know, the one where Brad Garret occasionally showed up. He is very tall...), and the list goes on forever. I hate pop with all of my soul, as well as my loins. I also hate anything that emulates pop; primarily commercial rock (you know, soulless crap with suburban teenage white girl lyrics, like Linkin Park, POD, and Staind, to name a few).

All that being said... I do enjoy Asian pop. It is shmexy.

I listen to alternative, electronica, trance, and Ephixa. :P Ephixa is awesome. Good pop bands of today are as follows.

Adele
Fun
Foster the People
And....that's about all.

a good song is a good song no matter what genre or label people pigeonhole it into. i don't listen to the radio, but i think that has something to do with the disgust of the 3 chord, synth cheese that songwriters hand over to singers like katy perry or brit spears to sing. they overplay everything! every 5 songs it's the same thing. adele is awesome, but i can't listen to her because every time i walk into a target or kroger it is playing on muzak or something. i can't listen to country :( it hurts my ears!

I DESPISE ADELE!!!!

Almost all pop is terrible. It's fake. It's garbage. AND EVERY POP SONG IS ABOUT 1 OF 2 THINGS!!! (sex and drugs) IT'S SO BORING!!!! But many people still like it. It's quite sad.

I don't like pop that much at all. I'm more of an 70s/80s rock guy myself (Led Zeppelin and Guns N' Roses especially). The only real reason pop is as big as it is now is because of rock softening up too much in the late 90s. However, I still appreciate pop music for what it's worth. Sure the organic feeling of music is usually not present but as a casual tune to listen to in a shopping mall or radio is fine with me. I can't stand the people who take it to the next level and start spamming lyrics from certain songs (*cough *cough from One Direction...) on social networks and think that they are instantly some philosopher because they can understand the 'true meaning' behind song lyrics. It makes me furious!

What I'm wondering is how they decide what's "pop" (popular). The pop stars usually come out of nowhere like one direction. If it's really pop it should be decided by album (or at least singles) sales. But I've never heard someone recommend an album before it hits the radio. So who decides it's popular....?

EDIT: What's with the hate for Adele? She's one of the good (if not great) singers still making pop charts today. The only reason I could see someone not liking her is if they constantly played her stuff, which would be annoying for any song.

Do you actually like it? I hate it. It's not music, it's "music". Electronic beeps and bloops with electronically edited singing certainly does not equal actual music. I especially hate Adele. The sound of her voice makes me cringe.

What are your thoughts on pop "music"?
Lol music is music, it speaks to different people and pop music in general is one of my favorites. I grew out of it when I was really young and got back into it when I was around 17. I worked with a few friends on a music blog so I had to listen to all kinds of music everyday.
As always, to each his own.
I noticed a lot of people in the anime or video game community hate pop, they complain that is has too much sex or drugs. Uhh, when did we all become 40 year old soccer moms? Do we not have sex?

I always think Pop Music is just the worst. . . but then I hear Country Music and my ears start to bleed.

Eh, it really depends. I'm not extremely fond of it myself, but if the artists can use the filters subtly, it can add a "fresh" element that can definitely make it sound interesting. However, most pop artists nowadays aren't really pop but hip-hop. So, if there is use of computers, it's done a lot. The bass pedal beat is compulsive, and the "instrumentals" are all computer-generated. It's not a huge problem, I mean, I will still call it music if there is a melody. The question is: "Can you or can you not hum to it?" If you can't, then it is not true music.

Regarding the rap... I have been trying to increase my tolerance for it lately. But it is basically poetry with emphasis on the meter. And an obnoxious beat behind it. But there's more. They do all of this auto-tuning and voice filters. So evidently, "rap" could easily stand for robots attempting poetry.

I am not extremely bothered by the use of computers, since the technology is available and they should feel free to use it. I just wish they didn't overdo it. Many modern rock and metal bands also use filters on their songs and instruments, though it is not as... nauseating. A little technological touch can make it sound crisp and clean, but too much just makes it annoying. For example, the band Nickelback... the singer has a filter separate the high and low pitches in his voice and brings them further apart, creating his "hoarse" voice effect. Use of computers is present in almost all genres of modern-day music, and it should not be a problem.

I personally don't like pop music because its so average and there isn't enough variety, but on the other hand The Beatles were a pop band when they started out and they were actually pretty good even though they became more popular when they changed into a psychedelic band.

No. Linkin Park is not pop (I guess their song "Burn it Down" is, since they actually play that one on the radio). I have no idea what you mean when you call Linkin Park "soulless" and commercial rock? They're popular...not commercial. You don't hear any of Linkin Park's stuff on normal radio (again, excluding Burn it Down). If you think they're soulless, listen to the lyrics of these songs, and hopefully that will change your mind.

Yeah. That's not about drugs and sex. These good songs tell stories. Not random, pointless, stupid crap, like one band I could mention (Rage Against the Machine, I know that's one of your favorite bands).

I'm really sorry to tell you this, but Linkin Park has actually gone down in quality with the release of "A Thousand Suns." As much as I adore their old music, they have actually dropped massively, and you could see it in "Minutes to Midnight." They were already moving away from their band's roots, going for a more pop feel, and the screamo songs they had on that album weren't all that great. "Bleed It Out" was maybe their only good song that they screamed in that entire album. "Minutes to Midnight" is exactly why I've entirely moved from any form of heavy metal, and more to alternative and rap.

Additionally, they play Linkin Park on the radio constantly. Here's a list of songs that I've heard on the radio.

  • What I've Done
  • The Catalyst
  • Breaking the Habit
  • In the End
  • Somewhere I belong
  • Numb
  • New Divide

I'm not sure what radio stations you listen to, but these were constant on the rock channel I used to listen to prior to it changing to "Easy Listening."

And then for my last point; Linkin Park talks about drugs in a few songs. "Numb" especially.

Numb said:
I'm tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface
Don't know what you're expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes
(Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow)

I've become so numb, I can't feel you there
Become so tired, so much more aware
I'm becoming this, all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

I'm not sure how you don't see it. This person's expectations have left him with nothing left to do than to use drugs as means of escape.

Linkin Park was a good band, no doubt, but you have them on too high of a pedestal, when they're just like every other rock band out there.

Those lyrics sound like they're coming directly from the diary of a thirteen year old suburban white girl. Seriously, it's just pop repackaged to make people who think they like metal listen to it. Metal is dead and Linkin Park (along with all other nu metal atrocities) is the casket it's buried in. Also, RATM had a legitimate message that they wished to address. Well, Zack De La Rocha did anyway. Linkin Park has no message. They're just whining *******.
