Finally, here's the next one.
Tekara Ki
District 9
I smile as I watch the Careers look at their ruined loot at the Cornucopia. They kick around, looking for anything to save. I had watched as Stella and Alec ransacked the place, taking food, weapons, and destroying anything they didn't want or need. Thurmal seemed to take it the hardest. I turn around, and head back into the swamp. I hate this Arena.
I hate it , hate it, hate it, hate it. The bog sucks on my feet, it's too humid here for my taste. I try to calm myself. No use crying over something I can't change, I tell myself. I really wish it had been something else, though. I go around and see the boy from 11, Elliot, giving some medicine to the boy from 10. I see a patch of bog that looks bile-colored (well, it always looks bile colored, but even more so).
I, like an idiot, noisily suck my foot out from the bog. Elliot turns around and sees me. "Career, or not Career?" he says, pulling out a sword. I hold up my hands in a show of surrender. "I'm not a Career," I say, and look at the other boy. He looks rather sick. "So, you've been giving him medicine?" I ask. He nods, and the boy speaks up.
"How do you know she's not lying, Elliot?' he asks, while standing up. His legs wobble and he falls to the ground, his face in the patch of bog he'd presumably vomited in. I step back. It seems self-centered, but I don't want vomit-swamp mix on my face. He stands up, and wipes his face off. "Why did I have to get this stupid stomach bug?" he says, to no one in particular.
"Do you want to be allies?" I ask. Elliot nods, but the boy from 10 doesn't. He retches and vomits into the bog again. "Sorry," he says. "Name's Zordo." I reply, "Name's Tekara." He tries to nod his answer, but he retches over again. He comes back up. "Zordo, should we let her in?" says Elliot. "I hate this stomach bug-I mean, yeah, ok. Maybe she could prove herself first."
Elliot nods. "Do you think you could provide us with some food for the night?" he asks. I nod. "I can do that," I say. "It's a deal then," says Elliot. Zordo doesn't say anything. I think you can guess why. I go and set up some traps. I wait a while, and a deer comes into my range. I flick my knife, it deliberately misses, it startles the deer into running into the trap.
The deer's dead. I call for Elliot and Zordo. Elliot comes, dragging Zordo along. "We're here," he says. "What have you got for us?" I reply, "One deer." Elliot smiles. "Great!" he says. We start to eat the deer, when Zordo vomits all over it. I look at Elliot, and I feel the impulse to either laugh or scream.
Before I can do either, the anthem sounds. The boy from 4 shows up. Our gaze is diverted back to the dead vomit-covered deer. We decide to wipe the vomit off and eat it. We send Zordo to the side of the camp so he doesn't puke on anything else. Guess what? It worked.
That's the end of the day.
