Might have been something left over from OoT's beta stages. Perhaps they were considering putting a giant clawed monster there but changed their mind?

I didn't really favor the idea of renting items. It devalues the dungeon a lot and I particularly didn't like having to re-buy the items when I died, only to find out he sells them for a large sum of Rupees later in the game. It's pointless, in my opinion. Should be kept how it was.

This helps so much, I'm really awful at collecting the Big Poes.
