Might have been something left over from OoT's beta stages. Perhaps they were considering putting a giant clawed monster there but changed their mind?

I didn't really favor the idea of renting items. It devalues the dungeon a lot and I particularly didn't like having to re-buy the items when I died, only to find out he sells them for a large sum of Rupees later in the game. It's pointless, in my opinion. Should be kept how it was.

Where was the cartridge purchased from? Was the box it came in sealed? I suggest going back to the store with your GBA and seeing if you swapped copies, it'd work. It could be the copies, or it could be your GBA. Does this happen with any other cartridge?
