Round 3 Update – Tournament Round 2 results! Tournament Round 3 is open!

Round 2 voting has now closed. Round 3 voting is now open.

Round 3 itself will consist of several sub-rounds. In Round 3, I will present the tournament bracket (single elimination NCAA-style tournament, see spoiler below) with correct seed placement as well as an info bank giving some basic details (ranks, achievements, tale of the tape, etc) about each of the 20 competitors to help you vote. ZD members will vote in each round for who they think will win each current battle in the round. At the end of each sub-round, I will tally the votes (each ZD member gets 1 vote for each battle in the round) and the martial arts figures with the most votes will move on to the next round in the bracket (ties will be decided by the higher seed). This will continue until the Championship Battle when the winner (as well as the 3rd place bronze competitor) will be decided.

The Round 2 results are below:

In the E-Battle of Round 2, Bruce Lee totally destroyed Michael Jai White, dominating his opponent in every way, winning 10-0. Lee’s quickness and mastery over all things martial arts proved to be too much for White as he was knocked out by a series of triple high kicks a mere 10 seconds after the bell rang. The Dragon is not to be messed with.

In the F-Battle of Round 2, Miyamoto Musashi slowly but surely took Chuck Norris apart after a rough start, beating the American icon 6-4. Musashi successfully translated his swordplay into hand-to-hand combat and although Norris broke his nose and successfully dazed our Samurai warrior with a few Tang Soo Do kicks, Musashi’s expertise with his hands proved to be too much in the end – winning the battle by unanimous decision.

In the G-Battle of Round 2, it was neck and neck the whole way through. Kazushi Sakuraba beat the crap out of Jet Li, and Jet Li beat the crap out of Kazushi Sakuraba. Li’s mastery over several constantly changing styles of Kung Fu gave Sakuraba a fight like he’d never faced before, and Sakuraba’s mastery over the grappling arts showed Li that his Kung Fu was largely useless when the fight was taken to the ground. In the end, the judges scored the fight a tie, with 5-5. According to UMAT rules however, Jet Li will be moving on due to his higher seed. This fight was one for the books.

In the H-Battle of Round 2, Rocky Marciano demolished Michelle Yeoh, winning 9-1. Yeoh’s acrobatics were impressive but Marciano’s sheer boxing skills took over the fight with a one-two combo that knocked Yeoh out cold and flat on her back in the first round.

In the I-Battle of Round 2, Royce Gracie grappled his way to victory over Manny Pacquiao, winning 6-4. Pacquiao came out strong addling Gracie with a flurry of powerful punches, but the Gracie legend quickly shot in for the takedown. Royce suffered a brutal series of punches on the floor but it wasn’t enough. Gracie’s jiu-jitsu proved to be too much for the boxer as the Brazilian got side control and ended up submitting our Philippine fighter with a triangle choke.

In the J-Battle of Round 2, Jackie Chan Kung Fu punched his way to a victory against Wushu legend Huo Yuanjia, winning 7-3. Yuanjia’s Kung Fu proved to be largely ineffective against the Drunken Master’s erratic movements and Hapkido edge. Chan was only hit 6 times in the whole fight, proving with his powerful kicks and quick handwork that he’s not just an actor, but the real deal.

In the K-Battle of Round 2, Muhammad Ali narrowly defeated Jack Dempsey, winning 6-4. It was close, but not close enough. Ali’s unorthodox defense and hard chin threw brawler Jack Dempsey off his game. Dempsey landed some amazing body punches early on which quickly crippled Ali, but Ali’s tactics and durability caused the vicious Dempsey to get too tired too quickly. Ali’s rapid-fire combos in the later rounds proved to be too much for the old school boxing legend.

In the L-Battle of Round 2, Anderson Silva MMA’d his way over Ip Man, winning 7-3. Ip Man’s impressive Wing Chun boxing landed a few unexpected blows to Anderson and proved to be somewhat effective in blocking the Spider’s impressive array of kicks, but it just wasn’t enough to get the job done. Silva’s training in so many powerful striking martial arts proved to be too much for Man’s narrow Kung Fu focus. The Spider knocked him out 2 minutes into the fight with a brutal triple jab combo and a roundhouse kick to the head.

Congratulations to Bruce Lee, Miyamoto Musashi, Jet Li, Rocky Marciano, Royce Gracie, Jackie Chan, Muhammad Ali, and Anderson Silva. Their Round 3 opponents will test them like never before.

The battles continue! Round 3 of the actual UMAT tournament starts now and will be open for 24 hours. Round 3 consists of the following battles:

In Battle M, we have 1 seed Bruce Lee vs. 2 seed Miyamoto Musashi.
In Battle N, we have 4 seed Jet Li vs. 5 seed Rocky Marciano.
In Battle O, we have 17 seed Royce Gracie vs. 9 seed Jackie Chan.
In Battle P, we have 10 seed Muhammad Ali vs. 12 seed Anderson Silva.

Here is the full bracket:

This project chooses winners by democracy. You can vote 1 time for each battle in each round. Round 3 consists of 4 different battles, so that means you may vote four times in Round 3; one time for each battle (M, N, O, and P). Please post your votes in a comment like this as an example:

Example

M Battle = [insert winner’s name]
N Battle = [insert winner’s name]
O Battle = [insert winner’s name]
P Battle = [insert winner’s name]

End of Example

The martial artists that receive most votes in their specific fight will move onto the next round. Ties will be decided by the higher seed.

Round 3 continues (Round 3 of the tournament itself begins), or voting to help decide who will move into the Final Four of the tournament, begins now and will close on 2:00 am United States EST on April 1, 2014. Vote so your favorite has a better chance of winning! This round is now over.
