I prefer Super Mario Galaxy over Super Mario Sunshine. Even though they were both VERY good games, Super Mario Galaxy had better music, better gameplay, and a better story.

I prefer Sunshine because it makes a great game to play in the summer due to all the tropical levels.

I really like Super Mario Sunshine, it is one of my favorite GC games. But in terms of "epicness", I choose Super Mario Galaxy.

Personally, I like them both and can't seem to decide between the two.

SMS: I loved the more of a Zelda feel from the exploration, F.L.U.D.D. I thought he was utilized well.
I didn't like how Mario was framed for graffiti and is generally disliked by the general populace at the beginning.

SMG: It Had a good difficulty curve, The use of Gravity provided for a fun variety of planets and puzzles, Mailtoad gave you more one-ups, And The co-op star bit collection was nice.
I kinda disliked the overuse of black holes, But I can't think of anything to replace those though.

Both: I thought they had a good variety of stages/missions.
I can't think of anything I disliked that is the same for both of them.

Anyway these are some of my thoughts, and personally I think I rank them more or less equal with a slight lean towards SMS.

I prefer Sunshine, though I did enjoy Galaxy very, very much. Sunshine is actually my favorite Mario game overall. I can't really give the best reasons, I'm just more keen on it. I love the tropical theme, the colorful culture (Delfino) they created, I love this game. If they don't make a sequel soon, I will be very sad. :(

Mario Sunshine all day. I laugh at these fools saying that Galaxy looked better, has anyone seen the water effects in Sunshine? They look amazing, especially for a 2002 video game, they STILL look good today.

The game had a nice concept too - Mario goes on a vacation for once and it goes down, interesting, and the FLUDD was very awesome - It allows you to defeat enemies in a different way and helps you reach far areas and once you're used to it they take it away to up the challenge in some missions. And it had a better plot - common, how many really saw who Shadow Mario was? The areas were very intriguing and it had a more free, sandbox feel to it. And the game had Yoshi, it didn't take another full game to put him in.

People complain that the voice acting was bad but common, what else did you expect from a Mario game?

In other words, the best Mario game so far, better than Galaxy and one of the best on the GameCube

I love Super Mario Sunshine a lot more than SMG. SMS felt fluid and good, whereas SMG while fluid, didn't feel good. Too clunky what with the gravity warps and all that.
