Clearly Link is no slouch in swordfighting as he is the one meant to win over Ganondorf each time they meet in game. He is the Legendary Hero whenever he appears. But Ganondorf has shown to be very capable with a sword himself a few times in the past. So much that Link may sometimes require help when fighting him. Or an extra edge in his favor through a special magical weapon or item. As far as swordsmanship goes, this does make me wonder who is the greater fighter. Who is the physically superior combatant with swords and skill alone when there is no intervention by the gods in the form of a Triforce piece or mythical destiny.
When there are no Triforces involved, who really is the superior fighter?
In my opinion I would place Ganondorf as the superior combatant, while Link is much better at using various tricks and items to his advantage. Ganndorf rarely has any more than a sword or spear any time he goes into combat. Link is often known to use bow, hookshot, mirrorshield, magical sword, and any other number of items to his advantage. As well as various healing potions and bottled fairies. However as shown near the beginning of Ocarina of Time, Ganondorf has an understanding of magic on his side. He seems to be fully capable of firing blasts at his enemies, throwing them back. In most games Link is still a novice in the ways of the sword. Usually having learned how to use one very early in the game or on a lesson by lesson basis through the game. The rest comes to him through experience. Ganondorf probably had superior training over a longer period of time as the Gerudo have a specific training ground behind their fortress. And as a gossip stone said the Gerudo prize superior skill in archery and riding, their king would certainly be no exception.
