When I judge sidekicks, I look at how they are able to help the protagonist above anything else. They may develop as characters as the story progresses, but if that doesn't help me the player out then it's useless. That's why I'm not gonna pick Midna, even though she was definitely the best character in TP.
No, I'm going with Fi. She is BY FAR the most helpful sidekick in the entire series. She can pull up relevant info on EVERYTHING. If you're stuck, you can always count on her to help you out, which is more than I can say for anybody else. She is also total no-nonsense; she never sasses around with Link, instead always considering his needs and what will help him the most. (Even with relationships; she advises Link to not mention to Zelda that toying around with Peatrice's heart you did.) Yes, even though at times she can be Capt. Obvious, I'd rather have her knowing too much information over her not knowing enough.
Plus, as Ventus pointed out, she's a freaking robot fairy. That's awesome. Kinda reminds me of the Zampakuto spirits from Bleach, how she jumps into and out of the Master Sword. And I really started to tear up when she left us at the end. What can I say, I have a soft spot for robots learning to love.
