Linebeck was a cool character. He started out as a terrible person, and then as the story progressed, he got better and better.

HOWEVER. WHERE ARE MEDLI AND MAKAR. YES THEY AREN'T WITH YOU THE ENTIRE GAME, but they were great companions.

Epona or the Crimson Loftwing. They don't shove obvious observations at you (Fi, Navi), they aren't mean with tacked-on niceness at the end of the game (Midna, Tatl), they aren't a Navi-knock-off (Ciela), they come whenever you call, and you are utterly indestructible on Epona in Oot and MM.

I like Spirit Tracks Zelda too, but you can't use her as a mode of transportation.

I personally went with Fi. I would have voted Epona but she's more of a pet than a sidekick so I decided not to.

Anyway, the reason I chose Fi was because she had useful information, she wasn't annoying and I liked her dancing. I also like that she's basically the personality of the Master Sword, which is way more interesting than any other sidekick, who don't tend to have backgrounds.

I vote Midna, because she had a lot of development throughout the game. We see her start out as a vengeful monster looking for someone to do her work for her. But then as the game progresses, she becomes caring and noble.

King of Red Lions is a close second, just cause he was so regretful with the way he spoke. He wasn't all "Do what I say!" It was more of a "If you do this, we can save your sister." and he then asked Link to help him. Not demand it, or just assume Link had to because he already was involved.

Tatl (IMO) I really don't have a reason, just like her the best. IMO:
Navi was helpful, but just to simple.
Midna was just plain scary!
Ezlo was cranky.
KoRL was cumbersome...
Ciela was nice, but almost a Navi clone in persona.
Linebeck was awesome! But I don't really consider him a Companion character.
Zelda was Zelda...
Fi a bit to much on the %s

Hmmm I have to go with Zelda from ST. Not only was she changing from a whiney brat into an understanding being but she was also part of the final battle. When it comes to help Midna gave you many options but she was not a part in the final battle. You had to fight Ganondorf alone. In the final battle in ST you had to use Zelda as well (in the first part) and that is what I like

The best kinds of sidekicks are the ones that are relevant to the story, which is why Midna is my favorite companion. Unlike Navi or Fi, the story would be practically screwed if she wasn't in it.

I also like it when your companion has an actual personality, and Midna seems the most fitting for that. It makes it seem like you're less alone, really. If all your companion does is give you information that it kind of obvious half the time, it doesn't really seem like they're an actual companion, they're just some living wiki or something.

I don't like having companions that exist for the sole purpose of giving me information. I prefer it if they're more involved.
