Fairies are recurring creatures in The Legend of Zelda series. They come in many different forms and sizes that normally possess healing properties. They restore Link's hearts if found and can even bring someone back to life or cure illness. They have been great allies to the hero since The Legend of Zelda, and some even travel with him.
The Legend of Zelda
In The Legend of Zelda, fairies can appear as enemy drops, or in two Fairy Fountains (three in the Second Quest). If collected, fairies randomly dropped by enemies heal three hearts of damage. Fairies in Fairy Fountains heal Link completely.
The Adventure of Link
- See also: Fairy Spell
The Fairies of The Adventure of Link also heal Link, but they can no longer be found from enemies. Instead, they may appear as a random encounter out on the field, or they are sometimes are hidden in secret areas or palaces.
A Link to the Past
A Link to the Past "faeries" (referred to in the singular as "faerie") heal seven hearts when touched. The game is the first time that Fairies can be captured in Bottles and carried around. They can be caught with the Bug Net when they are found randomly around Hyrule. If they are released from the bottle, they will immediately heal Link. In addition, they will automatically break free from the bottle if Link's hearts are fully depleted and save him from death.
They can also be found in fifteen fairy fountains, nine are located in the Light World, and another six are found in the Dark World.
Notable Fairies
- Venus, the Queen of the Fairies
- Waterfall of Wishing Fairy
- The Cursed Fairy, a Great Fairy cursed by Ganon
Link's Awakening
Link's Awakening (Game Boy) & Link's Awakening DX
Similar to The Legend of Zelda, Fairies in Link's Awakening will appear randomly. Occasionally, they will appear from trees if Link runs into them with the Pegasus Boots. Fairies cannot be caught in bottles, but there are Great Fairies in Fairy Fountains across the land that will heal Link fully. The Fairy Queen also appears in the Color Dungeon in the DX remake.
Link's Awakening (Switch)
In the Nintendo Switch remake of Link's Awakening, Fairy Bottles are added. These enable Link to capture a fairy to heal himself at a later time, but unlike in other games, they do not automatically revive Link on death - only the Secret Medicine does this.
Ocarina of Time
In Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, Fairies are a lot less random and easier to locate due to their specific locations. Fairy Fountains are hidden across Hyrule, and Fairies can also be located by playing Zelda's Lullaby near a Gossip Stone. They can be trapped in bottles and will automatically restore all of Link's hearts upon death. Link can purchase a Fairy Spirit in a bottle from the Potion Shop, which works identically to a standard bottled fairy.
In addition to the Great Fairies, who give Link magic spells or increased offense or defense, there are guardian Fairies that protect the Kokiri of the forest. Each child is assigned one as a partner. Link is not a Kokiri, but he is protected by Navi in Ocarina of Time anyway.
Majora's Mask
In Majora's Mask, Link teams up with Tatl to stop the Moon from falling. Tatl also has a brother named Tael. In Majora's Mask, there are Fairies called Stray Fairies which are scattered pieces of the Great Fairies.
Bottled fairies recover ten of Link's hearts, unlike in Ocarina of Time, where a bottled fairy will heal Link fully.
Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages
Like in Link's Awakening, Fairies appear randomly in Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages. Great Fairies are also present.
Four Swords
Fairies and Great Fairies appear in Four Swords.
The Wind Waker
Once again, Fairies can be captured in bottles to save Link when he dies in The Wind Waker. There are five Fairy Islands around the Great Sea, where both Fairies and Great Fairies reside. The Queen of Fairies also makes an appearance at Mother and Child Isles, where she gives Link the Fire and Ice arrows.
Four Swords & Four Swords Adventures
Four Swords Adventures introduces a special variety of Fairies called Force Fairies. They can be found in great numbers and count for the Links' lives, appearing from the Four Sword to heal them every time they die.[1][2] Multiple Force Fairies can be held at once, and there is no need to catch them in a bottle.
Great Fairies can also be found on certain stages. Some of them heal their health.[3] Others will upgrade whatever item the Links are currently wielding into a more powerful version.
The Minish Cap
Fairies and Great Fairies appear in The Minish Cap. Fairies in The Minish Cap only restore four hearts.
Twilight Princess
Fairies in Twilight Princess are not drastically different from other Fairies; they are glowing balls of light that can be stored in bottles to heal Link when he dies. However, they no longer circle around and attempt to heal Link if his hearts are already full. If a Fairy is used in this game, the Fairy recovers eight of Link's hearts.[4][5]
There is one Great Fairy in this game that lives in the Cave of Ordeals. Every time Link makes it through ten floors of the cave, she releases Fairies into one of the Spirit's Springs. At the final floor, she grants Link a bottle of Great Fairy's Tears.
Phantom Hourglass
Link's travelling companion in Phantom Hourglass is actually a fairy named Ciela. In addition, the Spirits of Power, Wisdom, and Courage are Fairies. While they do not heal Link, they can empower him in different ways. If Link manages to collect Spirit Gems, they give him different abilities. Leaf will double his attack, Neri will double his defense, and Ciela, when fully powered, will shoot lightning bolts out of his sword.
Spirit Tracks
There is only one Fairy in Spirit Tracks called the Spirit of Healing. She first meets Link in the Forest Temple when he plays the Song of Healing on the Spirit Flute from a stone near the entrance. She will heal Link any time he plays the song, as long as he is within a dungeon.
Skyward Sword
Fairies are slightly more difficult to locate in Skyward Sword than other games. They can appear out of pots or similar objects. Three Fairies appear if Link correctly draws the Triforce on a Goddess Wall. Again these can be caught in bottles and will revive Link if he dies. They can also be released when additional health is needed.
A Link Between Worlds
Much like A Link to the Past, Fairies can be found in various Fairy Fountains across Hyrule and Lorule. They can be caught with the Net and stored in a Bottle for later use. When released from a bottle, the Fairy will restore five hearts. If Link dies in battle while carrying a Fairy, it will revive him automatically.
Breath of the Wild
Fairies appear once more in Breath of the Wild, and work in a mostly similar way to previous games. They can be found around Great Fairy Fountains in the early morning, and also by cutting grass. However, they will only appear by the Great Fairy Fountains if Link has two or fewer fairies in his inventory. Fairies can be respawned close to the aforementioned fountains by holding an already captured fairy in Link's hands. They tend to be very shy and elusive, so they should be approached slowly, or by using stealth-enhancing resources like food, elixirs, or wearing the Stealth Set.
They will automatically revive Link if he falls in battle, leaving him with five hearts afterwards. This time, fairies can be used in cooking, dropping Fairy Dust to either amplify some dishes which Link can cook, or used alone or mixed with monster parts to create a Fairy Tonic.
Age of Calamity
"This mysterious fairy is able to heal all wounds. It is easily mistaken for a firefly at first glance, but it glows brightly both at night and during the day."

Tears of the Kingdom

Non-Canon Appearances
This section describes a subject that is or may be outside the core Zelda canon. |
BS The Legend of Zelda
As in The Legend of Zelda, fairies dropped by enemies heal three hearts when touched; while fairies in Fairy Fountains heal the hero completely.
In addition, there are timed events involving fairies. The most significant of these is during Week 1, where from 30 to 40 minutes on the clock, fairies disappear from Fairy Fountains. During the latter half of this period, from 35 to 40 minutes, all enemy drops become either fairies or blue rupees from a spell taught to the Old Man in the Starting Screen cave by the fairies.
The other timed events are when the Old Man casts "the spell written in the Chapter of Fate from the Forbidden Tome", and a single fairy appears in the middle of the current screen. This happens once in Week 1 (at 33 minutes), twice in Week 2 (at 12 & 35 minutes) and twice in quick succession in Week 3 (at 37 & 39 minutes). It does not happen in Week 4.

Cia's forces hunted down fairies to prevent them from aiding the Hyrulean forces. Proxi, fleeing from these attacks, took refuge in Link's care.
