Varke is a character in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
Breath of the Wild
Varke runs the Snowfield Stable, found along the pathway, northeast of the Hebra Tower. He runs both the Stable and the Inn. When talking to Varke from outside, Link can take a horse, board a horse, or register a new horse.[1] From the inside of the stable, Link can talk to Varke to rent out a bed. Varke offers two types of beds, a regular bed for 20 rupees, and a Soft Bed for 40 rupees.[2]
Tears of the KIngdom
Varke continues to run the Snowfield Stable. When Link first arrives at the stable, he can speak with Varke who will award him with a Pony Point. Varke is welcoming towards Link, asking if he wants to register a horse, or to take one out for a ride.[3]
A Picture for Snowfield Stable
- Main article: A Picture for Snowfield Stable
After completing one of the Regional Phenomena, as well as acquiring the Camera as part of the Camera Work in the Depths quest, Link can examine the empty picture frame on the wall in the stable. Varke will mention that the Stable Association asked them to hang the frames up to get ready for paintings to be put up.[4]
Varke wants to get a picture of a giant bird, with wings spread wide in the Hebra Mountains. He mentions that if Link travels to Talonto Peak and looks to the northwest on a clear day, he can see the form a giant bird on the mountainside. While Varke wishes he can go himself, he can't leave the stable unattended. He mentions even a picture of the giant bird would suffice.[5] This will begin the A Picture for Snowfield Stable quest.
It has to be a clear day in order to capture the picture, which means, the Tulin of Rito Village quest must be completed, otherwise it will be perpetually snowing. On a clear day, when Link looks down to the northwest, the snow on the ground resembles a bird. If Link pulls out his camera, he can take a picture of the Bird with outstretched wings.
Link can then return to Snowfield Stable and show the picture to Varke. The picture is exactly what he wanted to see. He asks Link if it's okay if he paints a copy of it. Varke will then paint a reproduction of the picture on the canvas in the stable.[6] As a sign of thanks, Varke will reward Link with a Pony Point.[7] He will also give Link some Spicy Meat Stew, a stable specialty at the Snowfield Stable.[8][9]
The Beast and the Princess
- Main article: The Beast and the Princess
On the pillar in the center of the stable, Link can examine the papers on the wall with footprints. Varke mentions that these are sketches of a rumored beast. The rumors are that Princess Zelda was seen with this creature and that the beast is able to devour solid rock. While he thinks its a dubious tale, he mentions that the farther south you travel, the more rumors you hear about the beast. He encourages Link to ask at some of the stables to the south. In particular, if Link speaks to Penn at New Serenne Stable, it will begin The Beast and the Princess quest.[10]

I want a picture of the giant bird with wings spread wide in the Hebra Mountains. Tell me, have you seen the lone cedar tree growing on Talonto Peak, the southernmost Hebra Mountain? - ↑ "Could it be?! You have a picture of the giant bird with its wings spread wide in the mountains?! Can I see it? Aha! This is exactly the picture I asked for! This would really liven up the look around here. Is it OK if I paint a copy? Thank you! Quite a sight, isn't it? The land really does look like a giant bird with its wings outstretched. It's hard not to marvel at the artistry of nature in the face of such majesty. Now, just give me a moment to whip up a reproduction. Haha, don't worry! I'm quite good at this, I promise." — Varke, Tears of the Kingdom
- ↑ "I knew it! It's perfect for this stable! And it's all thanks to you, Link. How spectacular! You could search the world and never find a more perfect painting for our stable. This is tremendous. Thank you! But if you have a picture you prefer of the giant bird, its wings outstretched under a clear Hebra sky... I'll happily paint a copy and hang it here. So if you ever want to change what's in the frame, simply bring me a new picture. It'll get as warm a welcome as any guest! To show my appreciation, I'm giving you one Pony Point." — Varke, Tears of the Kingdom
- ↑ "Oh yes, and please take this too! This dish is a stable specialty." — Varke, Tears of the Kingdom
- ↑ "Thank you for a truly splended picture. Please, feel free to use the stable whenever you want." — Varke, Tears of the Kingdom
- ↑ "Oh! Looks like those pictures caught your eye! Between you and me...those are sketches of the footprints of that rumored beast! Or so they say, at least. This beast is all anyone at the Stable Association can talk about lately. I have doubts about any of this, but... I've heard rumors that Princess Zelda was seen with this creature. It's a strange beast too—one that devours solid rock. When these sorts of stories spread, they do tend to get embellished, I suppose. It's already such a dubious tale, I'm trying not to spread it too much more myself. With this particular exception. Curiously...the farther to the south you go, the more rumors about the beast you'll hear. Who knows, maybe if ask around at stables down south, you might get closer to the truth." — Varke, Tears of the Kingdom
