If the biggest worry critics have is about the quality of the story, that just makes me have even higher hopes for the game. I appreciate a good story, but the story is among the last reasons why I love Zelda games. You can't please everyone.

I didn't see that until much later. I admit, seeing Zelda turn into an RPG leaves me very...disapointed.
Statistical and ability upgrades does not an RPG make. Having played Darksiders, no, isn't one.

That being said, I like what the trailer has shown us. The freedom reminds me a great deal of Dark Souls, and I'm okay with that.
Hardly. Zelda has never been anything close to a role playing game. It lacks player choice.
Um, do either of you realize that both Zelda and Darksiders are even officially classified as RPGs and have always been? Also, do you realize there Are different types of RPGs?

Right.

Now, the question is, what do you in Zelda U that hasn't been in the series?

Each mechanic of Zelda U has already been Zelda games before. These are just expanded ideas of those.

What about the open world, jumping off cliffs and not landing in a bottomless pit that has been made to look like the background, or the time freezing Magic whatever it is? Aren't those pretty new?

Time manipulation has always been in the series since OoT, and it was very prevalent in MM. Zelda U is just a different approach to that.

Open world was Zelda NES's main concept and it was the very first open world game. Zelda U again, just expands upon this idea.

You still can jump off bottomless cliffs as well in Zelda U. But really, all of the other cliff faces is really just an expansion of 3D Zelda in general.

My point is however, is that these "RPG aspects" have continually been in the series since the very beginning, and especially the very beginning. Zelda U merely combines all these aspects and expands upon them.

Oh? *checks Wikipedia*

"The Legend of Zelda is a high-fantasy action-adventure video game series created by Japanese game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka."

My biggest worry is this being an RPG and Nintendo completely changing another series identity

Zelda isn't an RPG, and never has been. It's an action/adventure game. Customization and some RPG elements doesn't make this an RPG. It never has been. There is no leveling up. There is no statistical or skill upgrades (i.e., your "bow" skill doesn't improve with "level ups" or with use).

That said, adding more RPG elements to the game isn't a bad thing. I don't know much about it (I'm trying to stay as in the dark about this game as possible, as I don't want to ruin too much of the game for myself), but I can understand both the excitement and reservation for the decision.

It's simply a wait-and-see.

Oh, well I guess it was the ocarina of time generation that started all these complains then? If a game is not like there lord and savior The Hero of Time, then they going to complain, complain, complain. I swear Zelda fans ***** and moan about the littlest of things, the game is too hard and I don't know where to go(make it accessible), the world is too small and don't have enough enemies(make the world bigger and have more enemies be around), the sailing mechanics in wind waker and the triforce shards hunt is tedious because I don't have any patience(give you a faster sail, and chance the plot of the story to make it more accessible), Eww, wind waker got cartoony graphics and I want a mature and dark Zelda game(gave you twilight princess), eww twilight princess graphics is too gritty and doesn't have any brighter colors(gave you skyward sword), the legend of Zelda is not innovative enough(gave you skyward sword's motion controls), There's not much to do in twilight princess's overworld(let you hunt for materials in skyward sword's world so you can craft them), crafting and looking for materials in skyward sword are both stupid and time consuming(dumb crafting down in a link between worlds), I want a challenging Zelda game(given you a stamina and shield meter and knowing when to use it), skyward sword doesn't have a bigger world and like to hold my hand too much(give you breath of the wild), Link is right handed, how dare you!(Zelda team: that's it I'm done!). Anything else I'm missing?

Yeah their false teeth are missing and those durn kids won't get off their lawn. ;)

I can see that as a valid worry as well. With the limited information we have, it does appear that this game will have a lot of new RPG style elements. I personally could see these elements as a positive or negative depending on how everything fits together in the final game.
