Why is the Legend of Hero ALWAYS Lost?

I understand the creators of the Zelda series wanted to make the games stand on their own, but theoretically aside from Ocarina of Time's Hero of Time, why is no other Link hailed by the masses as a hero? We can understand that Link is a humble person and probably would not want to be hailed, but when the land of Hyrule goes back to peaceful times, it seems like future generations forget the hard work that our Hero had done to seal away the evil that plagued the land. Anyone have any theories or statements?

The ancient hero is referenced quite a bit in Twilight Princess, which is probably SS Link (OoT's never became the Hero of Time on the CT), so the HoT isn't the only one regarded as a hero. There's a big reason why this was so important in The Wind Waker, though. WW was the only one that required the previous hero to be outright important to the story. The whole game was directly involved with the events of the adult ending of OoT that it was necessary for the HoT to be mentioned countless times. In other games this aspect isn't as important, so it doesn't really matter if the hero is mentioned or not.

Several of the games, including WW and SS, point out that this is just one of the legends. Others exist, but if they aren't directly relevant to the story at hand there's no point in bringing them up.

What Locke and JJ said, but if you want a closer look – perhaps the land of Hyrule was so caught up in their joyous moments that they threw all the texts and legends to the wind. That is something very common in real life, I don't see why it wouldn't happen to Hyrule. Another statement could be said as well; surely the Hero willingly or unwillingly had some of his life documented, so the way to seal any evil would've been recorded but lost to happier moments, thus allowing villains to roam free whenever they can.

Yepp. Secret archives so people dont know how powerless the rulers were to have to depend on one Man (or boy in some cases) to do what their entire army cound't...kinda embarrassing to talk about for them.
