Finally got around to playing Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy on Switch. I have no idea how I was ever introduced to this game or why we knew of it, but it's something my brother wanted for Christmas in 2003. It's such a nostalgic game for us but it unfortunately never spawned a series. So I was pretty shocked to see it get remastered on Switch and of course, I had to get it.
I don't think I ever really got to play the game much myself growing up and only ever remember seeing up to a certain point, but it's been cool actually seeing what this game has to offer and for a 21 year old game, it's still pretty good, even if it does suffer from some clunky camera control, janky combat, and some questionable design choices. It's definitely of its time, but I'm hooked and I'm determined to see it through.
It's no Zelda, but it does have an excellent sense of progression and offers quite an interesting twist with its platforming and puzzle focused Mummy segments that offer a wide variety of abilities to play with in solving its large scale puzzle rooms. I'm also really enjoying its Pokémon-esque collecting of monsters for display at the museum, personal use, and as part of a large sidequest that just adds another layer to its rather simplistic combat and brings a bit of excitement when encountering new enemy types. If the game was remade today, it would certainly be something special.
