i don't know how to add people to my group, can someone tell me how?

Well you already have the group open so that anyone can join, all they have to do is click on the little gray join button. So you could ask a few people to join up through VM or PM if you like. It is entirely up to them if they wish to do that though. The second option is to to invite some people. Within the first menu of the group there should be an option in the upper right side titled Admin, clicking on that will create a dropdown menu and the third option should be Pending and Invited Members. From there you can type in names of members and invite them to the group. This will not automatically add them to the group but it will send them a private message that they have been invited. They will have to chose yes or no before anything is accomplished so it is still their choice to be within the group or not.

People join it themselves. I don't do groups though...

They join themselves. You have the option to invite or moderate, though.
