I liked all the new abilities. This game reminds me of Super Mario Galaxy 2 in that Nintendo made a very successful game and decided to play it safe with a sequel while in my opinion they usually tend to take big risks. This isn't meant as a negative as Super Mario Galaxy 2 is an amazing game, and I'm sure I'll love Tears of the Kingdom. I'm just commenting that this looks like more of the same of a 10/10 game rather than what Nintendo has always done with this series with major overhauls each new game. The only thing I'm hoping they do change is improve the dungeon quality/style as that was the one gameplay thing I thought Breath of the Wild did worse than previous games.

I didn't think anything was super mind-blowing, but overall I liked what I saw. I've always been hesitant of what was always gonna be a reuse of assets and music. However, my favorite Zelda happens to be Majora's Mask. So I'm still hopeful. The only thing is, MM had a completely new map, while TotK's is obviously just BotW's but with sky islands and caves. Obviously, since we've seen so little, I can't say too much definitively. All I can hope for is that once the game comes out, I'll see legit dungeons and bosses, a meaningful story, and enough changes/additions to the environment to not nuke the exploration value after having played so many hours in BotW.

Ok here's my thoughts!

The new abilities look really cool. Fusing seems like it could have a lot of potential to make some cool stuff. Seeing Aonuma make a fan powered raft makes me hope we can take advantage of being able to cross water so fast by giving more available water to explore, maybe by expanding the size of Hyrule's ocean, adding more land masses further out. One of my hopes for BotW when we got the gameplay demo for it at the Game Awards in 2014 was that there'd be a decent amount of content on the ocean. So yeah, once again hoping for that but I don't really expect it.

I liked the glimpse we saw, but honestly I wanted more. It feels like what we were shown was more in depth on things we already knew or had a good suspicion we'd get. Pretty much everyone figured "crafting" or fusing was going to be a thing, the Ascend power we knew about since 2021, we saw Recall in the 2021 trailer as well but we thought it was going to be a modified version of Stasis or something.

What I wanted to see was more of what the sky really has to offer. Like if there would be towns and people living there. I wanted to know if dungeons would return, and if they are I wanted to see Aonuma go into one or at least go by one and acknowledge it.

Granted people have pointed out the Shrine icon was spotted on the mini-map in the demo, so it would seem there is a shrine equivalent in the sky.

Maybe it wasn't realistic to want to see these things in a demo that was only 10 minutes long, but I feel these things are key gameplay aspects that I would have liked to see in a gameplay demo.

One thing I've noticed a lot of people saying is that Aonuma was playing the game. I know it's pessimistic and irrelevant but I guarantee that Aonuma did the voiceover after someone else recorded the clip. I know it's dumb but it feels just a touch disingenuous when he tells you he's going to play.

Also an addendum to my wants for the game. I want to see the return of the piccori but I do feel that BotW Link is too old to see them. I mean, he is 117 in BotW although I'd accept that his nature is still 17 but he doesn't have the innocence of a child that is required to see the minish. Still want them but I think it makes sense not to see them. I think it would stop make sense for Link to see them out of the corner of his eye but never be able to focus on them because he's coming out of childhood.

Why wouldn't he be the one playing it? He does this all the time
Because he doesn't want to screw up live and if he's not playing it live, there's no reason for him to be the one playing it. I'm saying that in the old days (here it comes from the Zelda Informer codger), we would watch somebody play the game live and it felt more...intimate somehow. There's a reason Wii Music is so memorable. Everything feels more curated now.

Here's about an hour's worth of me poking through the video to find things that stuck out to me.

image.png

blatchery plain. we see soldier constructs on the ground near some kind of encampment. in the background we see a tower with spotlights and a new structure in the kakariko hills.
image.png

stables now have identifying puffs of smoke. theres a thunderstorm localized on top of the mountain in the bg as well as a sky island chunk with a tree on it
image.png

obligatory korok with backpack
escort missions possibly?
image.png

i just realized theres no land visible on the minimap atm. huh.
also that pile of construction supplies... theres a sign in front of it.
theres a few others of these in the video as well.
i wonder if this is like. reconstruction. we help people build houses on these spots?
image.png

new wooden structure on the ground next to the river
image.png

we see the swirly rock thing. i feel like this might be something to launch you up in the air maybe.
image.png

its also worth nothing that the dueling peaks now has fallen sky rocks stuck to its sides
image.png

glyph at lake hylia
image.png

thunder cloud over what looks like floria
image.png

new structure on top of mount lanayru
also a malice swirly rock down near where the minimap is
image.png

its worth noting that fuse seems to restore durability.
its yet to be seen if you can unfuse weapons or fuse more than two things together.
theres an interesting structure in the bg too
image.png

i wonder if this is just completely replacing elemental arrows
image.png

this isnt just amber ore, this is amber. its a new tier of ore material it looks like.
image.png

it almost looks like theres a house up there in the bg
image.png

the thing on his hip with the phials...
theres only one filled there now. in the past trailers there were four of them filled.
i wonder if theres a connection between him having 1 phial and 4 hearts and a map of this island.
this island might be the starting area. maybe.
image.png

image.png

there is. a lot. going on in the bg
these islands seem really packed. i dig it.
also shrine-like symbol on the map
image.png

lotta interesting stuff on the map there.
also SONIC GRIND RAIL SPOTTED HELL YEAH
image.png

the handable objects light up orange
which is veeeery interesting because so do those buildings in the bg.
the trees are not handable. we can not glue a fish to a tree. sad. actually its yet to be seen if materials are handable isnt it.
image.png

ranger construct is not hostile to link and he is able to be spoken to. what wisdom will he share...
also theres a cooking pot in the bg
image.png

can we stand on those lilypads
image.png

it seems like flying takes a LOT more battery life
wonder how viable itll be then.
there could be a way to upgrade that.... perhaps with the zonai charges....
image.png

in the right corner.... looks kind of like the frog statues around kakariko but i think this is a decayed construct or something. hm.
also shop symbol on the map.
and some weird glowy dot.
those other symbols i believe are marking caves.
image.png

we can see the big golem boss from the last trailer in the bg
im noticing that the icon for ascend lights up and dims at strange times.
image.png

its lit here but theres no ceiling.
image.png

it dims during link's flight. but not when he takes off. its still lit while hes flying but only at first.
i wonder if this maybe has to do with another sky island that happens to be above links head out of our view.
image.png

looks like its possible to cancel out of ascend. with that "Back ( B )"
image.png

its not lit while he's in freefall though
also bunch of malice things on the ground
image.png

my friend pointed this out to me the other day and its what made me pay attention to it so much but ascend lights up underwater but only while underwarer. not while link is floating at the surface. that's suspicious... could this hint to us being able to dive deep underwater somewhere and this gets us back to the surface fast?
image.png

image.png

this is a really gorgeous view.
image.png

this is next to proxim bridge.
another possible house building spot? theres also some construction supplies with a cloth with an insignia on top in the bg. i cant tell what the insignia is.
i really think we are gonna see reconstruction after all. thats cool.
also ascend is lit up here as well. itd be funny if it just automatically yeets you up to the sky from there.
image.png

as a closing thought... that huge building in the background just screams "dungeon" to me.
its bigger than everything else on the island. all the paths seem to converge at it.
i wonder if this one of the places where you attempt to purify yourself of malice and fix the master sword.

And that's a wrap. This presentation only made me more excited than ever. I think this game really will top BotW as best game ever made. Fuse and Ultrahand are insanely novel concepts and the ways you can interact with the world just expanded endlessly because of them. I seriously can't wait to explore everything again, too. Everything looks gorgeous, the UI and HUD look a lot more polished than in BotW, and the music we were able to hear sounded absolutely lovely. May 12th can't come fast enough.
