The giant panda is no longer an endangered species, following decades of work by conservationists to save it.

The official status of the much-loved animal has been changed from "endangered" to "vulnerable" because of a population rebound in China.

The change was announced as part of an update to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

But the update also brought bad news. The eastern gorilla, the world's largest primate, is now endangered.

Efforts by China, which claims the giant panda as its national animal, have brought its numbers back from the brink. The latest estimates show a population of 1,864 adults.

There are no exact figures for the numbers of cubs, but estimates bring the total number of giant pandas to 2,060.

Good job humanity, now we can go back to eating them again without the guilt.

i don't care much about pandas anymore. basically pandas are supposed to eat meat, but because bamboo is plentiful they became vegan and it killed their sex drive and they literally forgot how to mate

I read this somewhere and thought it was click bait but I'm really happy this is true. For once we've used our intelligence and resourcefulness to save something instead of killing it

Just wanted to correct a misconception, Pandas don;t have a lower sex drive than most other animals, nor are they "picky" about who to mate with.

Anyway, this is good news, however the article also says the Eastern Gorilla is now endangered, so one step forward and one step back?

By picky, they are much pickier than many other animals. Breeding dogs is much easier than breeding pandas. Some of the males straight up don't really feel like having sex and the females can be choosey with who they allow to have sex with them. The biggest issue though is that pandas ovulate once a year lol. And because females can be rather choosey and the males can be quite lazy or just overall "bad in bed", with the population being so low it's much harder for a suitable mate to come in this small window. Pandas are an animal that rely on large populations to continue their species which is why they've had such a difficult time force breeding 2 pandas
