Ocarina of Time Flag On Death Mountain?

I think it actually serves a dual purpose. It indicates that you can do something there to make a fairy appear, yes, but I think it's also to draw your attention to that part of the trail. To show you that you can go up there. I probably would have overlooked it myself (without a walkthrough) if it hadn't been for that flag.

If you stand next to it, Navi should fly by it and turn green. If you play the Song of Storms or the Sun's Song (sorry I can't remember which) a fairy should appear. Catch it in a bottle if you want.​

Well, anytime that there is that and you play song of storms, a fairy should appear. I haven't tried it on that particular one yet, but it worked in the small pool in Hyrule Field that leads to the Zora Domain.
