While still a dominant market in the movie-making world, theaters don't have quite the stranglehold on movies that they used to. While streaming was always a bit of a threat, it wasn't until the 2020 pandemic that people really seemed to disconnect from the experience theater-going experience. Nowadays I can only be bothered with a theater if it feels like an event. Everything else I view at home.

What about you guys? Is anyone still an avid movie-goer or are we all migrating into the all-consuming blob of streaming and DVDs.

I still do, generally for movies I'm really excited about and work out to see with my work schedule. Most of the time I go see two in a day, especially on discounted days.

Nope. I was going to see Alien Romulus in theaters, but decided to wait to watch it streaming at home. I am glad I did so I could rewatch enough times to really decide what I think of it.

I think I probably will not ever go to the theaters much anymore. The costs are prohibitive, some people have no respect other people paid good money to see the film and make obnoxious sounds, and ruin key moments.

I use to enjoy the process, everyone laughing at same moment and clapping, like when Yoda ignited his lightsaber in Attack of the Clones.
Nowadays I am willing to sacrifice such possible experiences to save money, and be able to watch a film in the comfort of my own home. Plus Hollywood makes crap movies now.. they use shakey camera, do tons of dark scenes I cannot see without high contrast (even then it doesn't work), and most new movies focus on social issues and political agendas that I can get for free on cable.

I want to be entertained, no preached at.

I used to watch between 3-5 movies in theaters per year pre-pandemic. The last 3 years, those numbers have skyrocketed. I now see between 10-15 movies in theaters per year. I think part of the reason is that I want movie theaters to exist for future generations. But I also love watching movies on the big screen with fantastic sound quality. I like watching new releases, but I also watch older movies when they're showing. For example, I watched Batman (1989) back in September, and I plan to go for John Wick's 10th anniversary screening.

No, I haven't been to a theater since 2019. It's not because I don't ever want to go again though. It's because the movies suck now. Why spend the money to go see a bad movie? I can do that at home. XD

Another reason I avoid theaters is that I find most of new movies are too hard to see (they film most of it in the dark scenes, and as if by candlelight, cheap skates!) and most of them are same story: time travel, alternate reality, the hero is bad now, you need to question everything you thought about the legenderium you love, and so forth. I am so sick of it.

I love movie theatres, I just don't love ticket and concession prices. Going to the movies is incredibly expensive these days so I generally only go to see movies that I've been looking forward to for a long time. Years ago, when I lived with my dad, we would go every week or two because it was always such an exciting experience seeing films on the big screen, and if it was reasonable I probably would still do that.

I generally do go to see a movie in a cinema if I've been looking forward to it for a while. For example I have strong memories of seeing Star Wars episode 9 in cinema. But now I just watch at home unless its a brand new film.

I enjoy the cinema experience. And yes, tickets are expensive, but it’s something I manage to thankfully work into my budget somehow. (Who needs to eat, right!?) Not including a live stream of Miss Saigon, just this past month I saw Joker 2, The Substance, and Terrifier 3.

Already budgeting for January next year with the Nosferatu and Wolf Man remakes coming out.
