If we're talking purely on a business stand-point, Microsoft by miles, it's barely a competition. Sony is actually the bigger company as far as employees go and actually has more revenue if I recall but Microsoft's profit margins dwarf theirs, and makes Nintendo's look like pocket money. People sometimes forget what a giant Microsoft still is. If we look at Market Capitalization, Nintendo sits at $14.39 billion. Sony is at $17.6 billion. And Microsoft is at $234.8 billion. So you can see just how huge Microsoft is. Their Entertainment division, which includes the Xbox, contributes very little towards that too. Microsoft would never financially be pushed out of the videogame market, unlike Sony and, more likely, Nintendo, at least hardware-wise, but they could leave it voluntarily, which some shareholders actually want. Though with GTAV's release anyone thinking Microsoft's going anywhere is kidding themselves.
Forbe's 'Global 2000' list keeps track of the biggest publicly trading companies. Nintendo sits at a very respectable #1078, considering what they do, Sony is at #506, and Microsoft is way up there at #41.
If we talk about technology, Microsoft wins again I'd say. They have a lot more resources, more invested into technology and advancements in it, and though may have slowed down a bit they were extremely innovative and creative in the old days. The Xbox One may be less powerful but it's OS and available features far out-weigh what's available on the Playstation 4. Whether you like these features is subjective and another matter entirely, but it's the more technically superior machine.
If we talk and 'likeability', which company we like more, well, that's like asking would I rather be slapped or punched. They both hurt. Both Microsoft and Sony have had their ups and downs in business but right now, in gaming, both are doing right by me. Even Microsoft's started to show a bit less hostility towards PC Gamers now, considering we're all likely buggering off to SteamOS, but better late than never and it's appreciated. So, it's a draw, really. Their just companies at the end of the day, trying to make money. They'll **** us and they'll love us, but they still are just out to make money at the end of the day.
But in every objective way possible, Microsoft is by far the better company.
