"The dark clouds of dusk cover this land... This drape of shadows is called...twilight. In this twilight, those who lived in the light...become as mere spirits...it is a place...where the dark ones and evil creatures dwell..."

Faron

The Twilight is an alternate realm compared to the Light World, and is where the Twili dwell. It refers to any region in Twilight Princess that has been completely stripped of light, with its inhabitants becoming either lost spirits or shadow monsters. The only way into the Twilight is through a Curtain of Twilight, which only the Twili can access.

Twilight Princess

In Hyrule, four Light Spirits dwell in each of the four main regions, and act as each region's guardian. During his conquest of Hyrule, Zant uses a light-absorbing fog made from Shadow Crystals to suppress the Light Spirits, causing them to lose their power - as a result, Hyrule is slowly engulfed in Twilight.

Inside the Twilight, the land gains an orange haze, with floating black pixels around the environment. Hyruleans who are exposed to the Twilight lose their physical forms, becoming lost spirits - the spirits are unaware of what has happened to them, and are forced to wander the Twilight in fear and uncertainty; they can also be transformed into Shadow Beasts if caught by existing Shadow Beasts. However, bearers of the Triforce are protected from the Twilight's effects - Zelda and Ganondorf, bearers of the Triforce of Wisdom and Triforce of Power respectively, keep their normal forms, while Link, bearer of the Triforce of Courage, transforms into a wolf instead. Enemies such as Bulblins, Keese, Deku Babas, and Kargaroks also keep their physical forms, instead transforming into shadow versions of themselves which have altered appearances.

To remove the Twilight from a region, Link must obtain the Tears of Light from the Shadow Insects and bring them to the Light Spirits to restore their power. Once the Light Spirit is no longer suppressed, the Twilight engulfing the region is removed.

Hyrule Warriors

This article describes a subject that is or may be outside the core Zelda canon.

In Hyrule Warriors, the Twilight appears as a gameplay mechanic in the "Land of Twilight" scenario in Legends Mode. During the scenario, Midna and her forces use the Twilight to conquer Twilight Field during their battle with Cia and her forces, which prevents Lana from locating the Gate of Souls.

In-game, when Midna's forces control a Keep, the surrounding area is covered in Twilight - the engulfed area is shown as a black square on the map, preventing the player from seeing troop locations inside. However, the Twilight in this game can be accessed by anyone, and does not affect non-Twili.

To remove the Twilight, the player must take the Keep inside the affected area, which immediately removes the Twilight. Midna's attack power increases for every Twilight-covered Keep in the stage, and the game encourages the player to remove Twilight to weaken her - however, Midna can still be defeated without doing so.
