Great Fairies are large and powerful Fairies in The Legend of Zelda series. They help Link on his journey by fully restoring his health, and they usually bestow some sort of gift upon him. Most of them live in Great Fairy Fountains or other sources of water.
The Legend of Zelda
The Great Fairies in The Legend of Zelda have many fountains across Hyrule. They fully heal Link whenever he comes to one of their springs.
A Link to the Past
The Great Fairies of A Link to the Past can do more than just heal Link. They often bestow more powerful items upon him, usually only after Link has thrown something into their fountain. A Cursed Great Fairy lives in the Pyramid of Power, and she will grant Link the Silver Arrow and the Golden Sword.
The Fairy Queen, Venus, also has a spring known as the Pond of Happiness. She can increase the amount of arrows and bombs that Link can hold if he throws Rupees into her fountain.
Link's Awakening
The Great Fairies of this game heal Link if he manages to find their springs that are hidden across Koholint Island.
The Fairy Queen is found in the DX Version of the game in the Color Dungeon. She gives Link the "power of color", allowing him to swap his green tunic out for a red or blue one. These boost his offensive and defensive power respectively. Despite her title, the Fairy Queen looks identical to all of the Great Fairies.
Ocarina of Time
In Ocarina of Time, Great Fairies are giant women dressed in ivy vines and leather boots, with red hair tied into three pigtails - this is their first appearance without wings. They live in Great Fairy Fountains scattered across Hyrule - Link can summon them by standing on the Triforce pedestal inside the Fountain and playing Zelda's Lullaby, and the Great Fairy will then reward Link with an upgrade. The Great Fairies can be summoned again once their initial reward has been received - if Link does so, the Great Fairy will fully restore Link's health and Magic Meter.
A total of six Great Fairies can be found across Hyrule:
Great Fairy of Power
The Great Fairy of Power lives at the top of Death Mountain Trail - to access her Fountain, Link must use a Bomb to destroy a breakable wall. This Great Fairy is the only one required to complete the game, as she rewards Link with Magic Power and teaches him the Spin Attack. Darunia will recommend that Link visits her once he has completed Dodongo's Cavern.
Great Fairy of Wisdom
The Great Fairy of Wisdom lives in Death Mountain Crater - to access her Fountain, Link must use the Megaton Hammer to destroy the boulders blocking the entrance. This Great Fairy doubles the capacity of Link's Magic Meter.
Great Fairy of Courage
The Great Fairy of Courage is located outside Ganon's Castle - to access her Fountain, Link must use the Golden Gauntlets to lift the huge pillar blocking the entrance. This Great Fairy halves the amount of damage Link takes.
Great Fairy of Magic
The Great Fairy of Magic appears in three different Fountains, and will give Link a unique item at each one. To access each Fountain, Link must use a Bomb to blow the entrance open.
- The first Fountain is in Hyrule Castle, in the dead end. The Great Fairy will give him Din's Fire.
- The second Fountain is in Zora's Fountain, behind Lord Jabu-Jabu. The Great Fairy will give him Farore's Wind.
- The final Fountain is located in Desert Colossus, near the oasis. The Great Fairy will give him Nayru's Love.
Majora's Mask
The five Great Fairies of Termina each reside in one of the five regions of the land. During Link's quest, he learns that their forms have been shattered into multiple Stray Fairies and scattered by the masked Skull Kid. Link must seek out their missing pieces and return them to their fountains before the Great Fairies can aid him in return. Their upgrades range from magical techniques to enhanced defense to a powerful, two-handed sword.
Great Fairy of Magic
The Great Fairy of Magic, whose signature colour is orange, is the only one required to rescue in order to complete the game. Link and Tatl first visit her while Link is a Deku Scrub, hoping that she can help them. The single Stray Fairy missing from her fountain is found hovering above the Laundry Pool during the day and near the Stock Pot Inn in East Clock Town by night; after collecting it and reuniting it with the others, Link receives the ability to shoot bubbles from the restored Great Fairy, along with a new Magic Meter. She advises him to seek out Professor Shikashi at the Astral Observatory if he wishes to locate the Skull Kid, and to visit her again once he regains his human form.
When Link visits the Great Fairy after learning the Song of Healing, as instructed, she bestows upon him the Great Fairy Mask and requests that he use it to restore the other Great Fairies across Termina.
Great Fairy of Power
The magenta-haired Great Fairy of Power lives in the Woodfall area, near the Woodfall Temple. If Link gathers the Stray Fairies inside that temple, she teaches him how to do a more powerful Spin Attack, although it takes up Magic Power.
In Majora's Mask 3D, while retaining the same reward for Link, the Great Fairy of Power's fountain has been relocated to Snowhead, while the Great Fairy of Wisdom occupies her former location in Woodfall.
Great Fairy of Wisdom
The green-haired Great Fairy of Wisdom can be found in her fountain in the Snowhead region, under the entrance to Snowhead Temple. Once she is reunited with the missing Stray Fairies from the temple, she doubles Link's Magic Meter.
In Majora's Mask 3D, the Great Fairy of Wisdom has been swapped with the Great Fairy of Power in terms of location, now residing in Woodfall and allowing Link to extend his Magic Meter earlier in the game.
Great Fairy of Courage
The blue-haired Great Fairy of Courage is found in Zora Cape area after jumping across some rocks and using the Hookshot to reach it. If Link brings the Stray Fairies from Great Bay Temple, she doubles his defense, and any damage Link takes will be reduced by half.
Great Fairy of Kindness
The yellow-haired Great Fairy of Kindness lives in Ikana Canyon. If Link gathers the Stray Fairies in Stone Tower Temple and brings them to her fountain, she gives him the Great Fairy's Sword.
Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages
- Main article: Great Fairy (Oracle Series)
The Great Fairies of Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages do the same thing as their counterparts in Link's Awakening. There is also a special Fairy Queen.
Four Swords
The Great Fairy of Forest meets the Links at the end of the Sea of Trees, where she rewards the Links with a key, depending on how well they did.
The Great Fairy of Flame meets the Links at the end of the Death Mountain, where she rewards the Links with a key, depending on how well they did.
The Great Fairy of Ice meets the Links at the end of the Talus Cave, where she rewards the Links with a key, depending on how well they did.
The Wind Waker
In The Wind Waker, seven Great Fairies inhabit various locales on the Great Sea, ranging from the forest of Outset Island to the five Fairy Islands. They are given a more abstract, doll-like appearance in comparison to earlier games, although they retain their three flowing plaits of hair from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. The types of upgrades they bestow upon Link are determined according to their colors, as noted below.
- The two pink Great Fairies grant Link expansions to his Wallet, allowing him to carry 1,000 and 5,000 Rupees, respectively. One is found on Outset Island; the entrance to her fountain has been blocked by a boulder, requiring Bombs in order to destroy it and get inside. The other resides on Northern Fairy Island and requires no items in order to be accessed.
- The two blue Great Fairies upgrade the carrying capacity of Link's Bomb Bag, increasing it from 30 to 60, and from 60 to 99. Their fountains are found on Eastern and Southern Fairy Island, and both require Bombs in order to destroy a blockade and gain access.
- The two green Great Fairies increase the amount of Arrows Link can carry in his Quiver, going from 30 to 60 and 60 to 99, as with his Bomb Bag. Their fountains are located on Western and Thorned Fairy Island; both require the Skull Hammer from the Forsaken Fortress in order to be entered.
- A single purple Great Fairy can be found near Two-Eye Reef, where she has been ingested by a Big Octo. Link can defeat the beast by attacking its four eyes in order to free her, and as thanks, she shares some of her power with him by doubling the length of his Magic Meter.
There also appears a Queen of Fairies, whom Link encounters within the larger of the Mother and Child Isles. She appears to be but a child, but certain parts of her dialogue hint that this may not be her true form. She bestows upon Link the power to use Fire and Ice Arrows, which are necessary to enter the Earth Temple and Wind Temple later in the game.
Four Swords Adventures
In Four Swords Adventures Link can encounter a Great Fairy in certain stages, usually in a cave or dungeon. If Link throws a certain item into the pond below the Great Fairy, she upgrades it to a Level 2 item. Encountering a Great Fairy is often crucial to completing puzzles and the stage itself.
The Minish Cap
There are three Great Fairies: Butterfly, Mayfly, and Dragonfly. If Link passes their individualized tests, they reward him with the ability to carry more Rupees, Bombs, and Arrows respectively.
Twilight Princess
There is only one Great Fairy in Twilight Princess, and she resides inside the Cave of Ordeals. She can be found on every tenth floor, e.g. tenth floor, twentieth floor, etc. Upon reaching her every 10 floors, she releases regular fairies to one of the Light Spirits' springs. Upon reaching the last level, she gives Link a Bottle with her tears in it, and promises to give more whenever he runs out at any Light Spirit spring. Link can only carry one bottle full of Great Fairy's Tears at a time. Additionally, once Link has reached the final floor, she congratulates him, and then say that people are in need of his powers above the surface. She then sends Link to one of the four Spirit's Springs.

Breath of the Wild
The four Great Fairies in Breath of the Wild assist Link in his quest by enhancing certain pieces of armor at the cost of materials needed for the upgrade. Each Great Fairy must receive an offering in order to open her Great Fairy Fountain and restore her power, which then enables her to bless Link's armor; 100, 500, 1,000, or 10,000 rupees depending on how many have been previously restored. The level to which Link's armor can be blessed by any given Great Fairy is relative to the number of Great Fairies restored to power. In order to reach the highest level, all four Great Fairies must be restored.
The four Great Fairies are:
- Cotera, found in the woods north of Kakariko Village in West Necluda.
- Kaysa, found on the mountain south of Tabantha Tower on the Tabantha Frontier.
- Tera, found beneath the Gerudo Great Skeleton in Gerudo Desert.
- Mija, found in the woods south of Tarrey Town in Akkala.
All four Great Fairies share an immense fondness for Link and delight in flirting with him whenever he visits them. This even extends to their upgrades, which are given in increasingly intimate ways, such as cuddling and kissing him, much to Link's chagrin.
A fairy-like creature called The Horse God Malanya can be awakened in southern Faron, though it's not related to armor upgrades. Malanya revives slain horses for Link instead.
Age of Calamity

The four Great Fairies from Breath of the Wild appear as a composite playable character in Age of Calamity.
Tears of the Kingdom
The four Great Fairies in Tears of the Kingdom help Link on his journey in a similar fashion as they do in Breath of the Wild, upgrading pieces of armor in exchange for materials. The amount of times each piece of armor can be upgraded (blessed) is equal to the amount of Great Fairies Link has unlocked. The Great Fairies appear in different places than they do in Breath of the Wild and require a quest, instead of rupees, to unlock. These quests require other fairies' quests to begin, meaning they must be unlocked in the order listed below.
The Great Fairies are:
1. Tera, found near the Military Training Camp on the path northwest of Woodland Stable in Eldin Canyon. Quest: Serenade to a Great Fairy.
2. Kaysa, found atop a hill west of Outskirt Stable in Hyrule Field. Quest: Serenade to Kaysa.
3. Cotera, found just south of the Dueling Peaks Stable across the Little Twin Bridge in Rabella Wetlands. Quest: Serenade to Cotera.
4. Mija, found northeast of Snowfield Stable in Tabantha Tundra. Quest: Serenade to Mija
Malanya Spring, inhabited by Malanya can also be found. It appears in Akkala, just west of the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab.
