Adventure Mode is a game mode in Hyrule Warriors.

Overview

In Adventure Mode, the player chooses from one of several maps to explore. Each map consists of a 16x8 grid in the artstyle of The Legend of Zelda, each square containing a unique scenario, for a total of up to 128 unique battles per map (although some maps contain blank squares). The player, represented by an 8-bit sprite of their warrior, can move between and enter completed squares on the map to play through each scenario. Completing squares will unlock adjacent squares, although some will be separated via wavy black lines, meaning that the square cannot be unlocked from that specific battle and the player must instead work their way round.

Some battles will restrict the player to using a specific warrior or weapon. Other battles can contain special rules that handicap the player, requiring them to play with special tactics in mind.

Victory Ranks and Rewards

After completing a square, the player receives a rank; C (bronze), B (silver), or A (gold), although some regions use B (bronze), A (silver), and S (gold) instead. The rank the player receives is judged based on three factors: K.O. Count (how many enemies the player defeated), "Clear Time" (how fast the battle is won) and Damage Taken (total percentage of max health lost). Depending on the rank received, not all adjacent squares may be opened up - the rank required to open a square is shown via an arrow, with the required rank printed on.

The player can unlock new warriors, weapon tiers, costumes, Companion Fairies, Fairy Food, Fairy Clothing, Gold Skulltulas, Heart Pieces, and Heart Containers for any of the playable warriors. Some rewards require an A rank to obtain, while others are hidden in certain Keeps - Companion Fairies and Fairy Food are found inside of brown Jars, while other rewards are placed in Treasure Chests that are revealed by capturing the Keep.

Item Cards

Main article: Item Card

Item Cards are special items that are randomly replaced around the map; they can be obtained by winning the square they are placed on, with items respawning frequently. The player is able to search unlocked squares, and use Item Cards in specific locations; using them in the correct tiles will unlock hidden rewards that can be obtained in that battle. Some squares contain hidden enemies, meaning the player cannot enter the battle until they use a specific Item Card to reveal the enemy.

In Definitive Edition, the player is able to purchase Item Cards they have previously found from the Item Card Shop for Rupees, which cuts back on grinding.

Network Links

In the Wii U and 3DS versions, if the player is connected to the Nintendo Network, they may find Network Links scattered around the map - these Links resemble the actual Link, but wear a different-colored tunic. Playing a battle with a Network Link on it will add an extra reward, such as a weapon or material, and upon clearing it, the player receives a "Friend Bonus" of 100,000 Rupees and a temporary EXP bonus.

Adventure Map

The Adventure Map, based on the overworld of The Legend of Zelda, is a 16-by-8 grid made up of 128 scenarios. These battles are either Adventure Battles which are structured similarly to scenarios in Legend Mode, or Challenge Battles which have specific victory conditions such as accumulating a certain number of KOs or defeating one or more Giant Bosses. The battles are not connected to each other with a story, except the intro does provide a rudimentary backstory (Ganon has unleashed several monsters) and overarching objective (defeat the monsters and ultimately Ganon). There is also a special Rewards Map whose stages are unlocked by collecting Gold Skulltulas and completing illustrations, and certain DLC packs include additional maps.

Hyrule Warriors Legends includes all maps from the Wii U game, including DLC, and adds DLC packs of its own. Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition includes all maps from both games. Both also shuffle unlockables to some extent, partly to allow for there being more to unlock.

Rewards

Certain characters (Agitha, Zant, and Ghirahim), weapons, and costumes are unlocked in Adventure Mode, in addition to other collectibles such as Heart Pieces and Gold Skulltulas. Some of these are awarded upon completing a battle, some require an "A" rank, and others can be found under certain conditions within the battle. Weapons, Heart Containers, Pieces of Heart, and some Gold Skulltulas can only be earned when playing as the pictured warrior. One exception is costumes, which are awarded for completing the stage with any warrior. Often, these rewards are hidden and must first be unlocked using an Item Card. The stage can still be completed (except in cases of hidden enemies) before revealing the reward, but then the player will not receive that reward even if other conditions are met.

Navigation

Players navigate the map by completing stages with certain ranks to unlock adjacent stages. The required rank is displayed on colored arrows surrounding the warrior on the map. Completing a stage will unlock all adjacent stages requiring a rank equal to or lower than the earned rank. The lowest rank is "C", so stages requiring a "C" rank are unlocked simply by completing the adjacent stage. Some stages can only be accessed after using a certain Item Card, such as the Hookshot. After the path is revealed, the player must then complete the stage with at least the displayed rank in order to proceed, even if that rank was already achieved before using the item. Colored regions are unlocked as the player progresses through Legend Mode. The following table lists the scenario which must be completed in order to unlock each colored region.

Region Scenario
Green The Sorceress of the Valley (Valley of Seers)
Orange The Shadow King (Palace of Twilight)
Purple The Water Temple (Lake Hylia)
Brown Sealed Ambition (Sealed Grounds)
Blue Shining Beacon (Valley of Seers)
Red Liberation of the Triforce (Ganon's Tower)

Item Cards

Many stages award an Item Card upon completion. These are used to unlock rewards, reveal hidden enemies, and create paths to new stages. Once an Item Card is received from a stage, it will reappear on that stage after completing a certain number of battles. To use an Item Card, press X on the map screen to search the stage, then select the item to use, and finally select the square to use it on. If one is familiar with the original overworld from The Legend of Zelda, one may be able to guess the appropriate space and item. Otherwise, using the Compass will cause the correct space(s) to sparkle. From there, it is usually obvious which item to use. It is not required to use the compass.

Master Quest Map

TODO: Add an image showing the colored regions

Master Quest Items

The Master Quest Map uses the same Item Cards as the Adventure Map, with some changes. The Recorder must sometimes be used on trees or other spaces. Each map has its own inventory, so Item Cards obtained in the Adventure Map cannot be used in the Master Quest Map.

Master Quest Rules

Each stage has one of the following rules, intended to make it more difficult.

Speed Run!
Clear the battle within 15 minutes.
No Healing!
The player cannot use potions, and no healing items will appear
No Guarding!
Guarding will not protect the player's character from enemy hits.
No Item Attacks!
The player cannot attack using bombs, the bow and arrows, the boomerang, or the Hookshot.
Don't Get Hit!
A single blow will put the player's character at death's doorstep! You'll need to make effective use of the special Clock item to freeze enemies.

Twilight Map

TODO: Add an image showing the colored regions

Twilight Items

The Twilight Map has its own set of item cards, borrowing just a few from the original set.

Item Uses Item Uses
Compass Use this while searching to identify where an Item Card can be used. Clawshot Use this to pull yourself to a distant object.
Lantern Use this on torches to reveal hidden enemies. Water Bomb Use this on submerged rocks to destroy them.
Bomb Use this on boulders to reveal hidden staircases. Digging Mitts Use these on soft earth to uncover hidden stairways.
Jar Use this on switches to reveal hidden staircases. Ooccoo Use this on a green portal to warp to another location.
Fishing Rod Use this to catch fish in bodies of water. Tears of Light Use these to clear away areas covered in Twilight.
Spinner Use this on cog-shaped holes to reveal hidden staircases. Tears of Twilight Use this on any map square to reopen all areas affected by the Twilight Realm.

Twilight Rules

Some stages are covered in Twilight. These stages have special rules much like the Master Quest stages. In addition, the map will not show enemy positions when playing these stages. Both of these restrictions can be lifted by using a Tears of Light Item Card on the stage's search screen. Once the Twilight has been cleared from all stages on the map, a special Tears of Twilight Item Card will appear on the starting square, which can then be used to bring back the Twilight Realm and the associated restrictions on the affected squares.

No Special Attacks!
Defeating enemies will not fill the Special Attack gauge, and no Force Fragments will appear.
No Focus Spirit!
Magic Jars will not appear, so you will be unable to fill your Magic gauge.
No item attacks!
Link cannot attack using bombs, bow and arrows, the boomerang, or the Hookshot.

Termina Map

TODO: Add an image showing the colored regions

Like in Majora's Mask, the Termina Map features a 72-hour countdown. Each time a stage is completed, one hour is subtracted and the moon grows closer. Once the countdown hits 0, the map is reset - all squares except the starting square, completed Owl Statue stages, and squares surrounding those stages are locked and the countdown returns to 72. Rewards and Item Cards received are not lost. Ranks achieved are also saved, so if a player previously unlocked a stage by achieving an "A" rank on an adjacent stage, the player would only need to complete that stage with any rank the next time around. The Song of Time Item Card can be used to reset the map at any time, and the Inverted Song of Time will add 10 hours (10 stages) to the countdown.

Completing a stage on a square with an Owl Statue will activate that statue. Stages with activated Owl Statues will remain unlocked after the map is reset, as well as any squares surrounding it (even across boundaries). The countdown can be stopped completely by gathering all four Giant Item Cards and using them on the Clock Town search screen, and then defeating the Dark Ruler in the revealed area.

Termina Items

Item Uses Item Uses
Compass Use this while searching to identify where an Item Card can be used. Deku Stick Use this on torches to reveal enemies.

Mask of Truth Use this on the Search map to double your defense for one battle. Inverted Song of Time Play this on the Search map to add 10 hours back to the clock.
Majora's Mask Use this on the Search map to fill your Magic and SP gauges for one battle. Giant Use all four on the Clock Town search screen to reveal a hidden map square!

  • If Ganondorf needs your help, go assist him. It's an automatic loss if he flees the fight.
  • Zant is terrible at fighting captains and commanders, so if you're going for the A Rank, leave several minutes for Ghirahim.

  • If the Giant Bosses team up, run away. They should begin to move away from each other.
  • Ganondorf's shadow ball combo plus a special attack will deplete most of each Bosses weak point gauge.
  • To make Ganon's weak point gauge appear, you'll have to counter four attacks. When his right hand glows orange, throw bombs at it. When a blue eye appears on his left hand, fire an arrow at it. When he jumps in the air, his tail will glow purple; use the Hookshot on it. Finally, when he fires seeds at you from his shoulders, use the Boomerang. Once all of this has been done, a purple glow appears on his head. Hit it with an arrow, and the weak point gauge will finally appear.

Tips
  • Ghirahim is fairly efficient at taking down the Argoroks. To avoid getting teamed up on, take out the Argorok in the south first. The Argorok in the middle will most likely come down there as well, but If you stay in the south while fighting the Argoroks, Manhandla will probably not interfere with you.
  • For the weak point gauges, use the Hookshot on Argorok's tail when it's purple. For Manhandla, use the boomerang on its heads when they turn green, usually after a seed attack. To trigger the seed attack consistently, stand a medium distance away. Remember to block!
  • The time limit should not pose a problem here. Facing both Argoroks at once may pose an issue with the damage limit, but their attacks are fairly easy to dodge once you learn their attack patterns.

Use the Fairy of Darkness in West Field Keep. For the fight against Ganondorf, lure him out of the Keep and fight him outside of it. This is much easier to do than trying to capture West Field Keep from outside.
  • To get Ganondorf outside the Keep, rush the center and put Ganondorf between you and an exit. Fire a Special Attack, which will throw Ganondorf all the way back to the exit. Use a few basic attacks to push him out. So long as Sheik stays close to the Keep, Ganondorf will also stay out there.

If you're having trouble, focus entirely on the small guys first. It's easier to take down the big one without having the small ones messing up your combos.
  • Second Room: Try to keep everyone in a group. When a weak point gauge appears, deplete it and hit everyone with the strong attack. If you're having trouble, lure the faster Dinolfos away and take them on separately from the Moblins.
  • Third Room: Same weak point strategy from the second room can be used here. The Aeralfos is the biggest threat, so it may be worth focusing on him first. It's also a good idea to take out the Beamos immediately upon entering the room.
  • Remember that you have 15 minutes to do this for the A Rank. Take your time and allow enemies to reveal their weak point gauges. It's much safer (and faster) to fight this way.

EnemiesMissions
Start
  • Defeat the enemy captains to lure out the commander.
  • Defeat the enemy commander.
Tips
  • Get Lana up to at least level 70-75 and have most of her badges unlocked. This is probably her hardest mission to A Rank since her weapon is terrible at getting high KO counts. You'll need the high level damage.
  • Focus entirely on the captains at first. Use any area attacks to get some KOs while doing so. For any Aeralfos, rely on their weak point gauges. Ignore the Gold Cucco. Save your Focus Spirit.
  • Use the large Cucco special attack to clear out Keeps in one attack. Just make sure you get a line of enemies in front of you first.
  • Once the captains are gone, a huge amount of enemies will move out from the southwest. Use your Focus Spirit here! This is the only place to rack up a lot of KOs during the entire mission.
  • Save the treasures for a non A Rank run. Link will take several minutes to defeat, and fighting against the captains will likely take a good 10 minutes.
