EX Trial of the Sword is a Side Quest included in The Master Trials DLC for Breath of the Wild.

Overview

The Trial of the Sword is a set of three gauntlet-style dungeons, each divided into a series of floors - dubbed the Beginning Trials (13 floors), Middle Trials (17 floors) and Final Trials (24 floors) - which must be defeated in order. Link must defeat every enemy on a floor for the warp to the next floor to activate, with the exception of rest floors. There is one rest floor in the Beginning Trials, two in the Middle Trials, and three in the Final Trials; which each have three chests with weapons or armor, plus a Cooking Pot, trees, and some food.

Link begins each trial with nothing but his Sheikah Slate and underpants, and must obtain equipment and armor as he goes on. The Champions' Blessings, Amiibo rune and Master Cycle Zero rune are disabled throughout. The game cannot be saved, there are no checkpoints and Link cannot rest at a fire during the trials.

Slain enemies do not drop Monster Parts, and as such, it's not possible to cook Elixirs from monster parts. There are no animals or insects outside of the rest floors, but some materials and weapons can be found on enemy floors, and floors with thick trees may have nests with Bird Eggs in them.

Each trial ends when Link reaches the monks' floor at the end of the trial, where he recovers the Master Sword, upgraded by 10 points; and is then returned to Korok Forest with all of his normal equipment, and nothing he picked up during the trial. If Link dies, he likewise sent back to Korok Forest, and must retry from the start on his next attempt.

Requirements

Purchase and install the Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass DLC, and complete The Hero's Sword Main Quest to obtain the Master Sword. If The Hero's Sword is already completed when the DLC is installed, the quest will unlock immediately the next time the save file is opened. To begin, the Master Sword must be returned to its pedestal in front of the Great Deku Tree in Korok Forest to enter the Trial of the Sword.
