I saw this thread on another forum and thought it was a worthwhile discussion topic for ZD.
Majora's Mask 3D is one of the most hyped, if not the most hyped, 3DS games of 2015. Nintendo finally has a chance to deliver this cult classic to the masses.
According to vgchartz, the original N64 version of Majora's Mask sold 3.36 million units making it the 11th best selling version of a Zelda game to date. The N64 version of its predecessor, Ocarina of Time, is the best selling version of any Zelda game at 7.60 million units sold. Ocarina of Time 3D sold 3.56 million copies putting it 10th in Zelda sales.
There are a few things Majora's Mask 3D has going for it. First of all, there are more 3DS owners than there were Nintendo 64 owners (50 million vs. 33 million). More importantly, Majora's Mask on the Nintendo 64 required an additional investment in the form of the N64 expansion pack.
Unfortunately, Majora's Mask has the legacy of being one of the least accessible Zelda games, particularly due to its save system. Newer Zelda games are also struggling in sales. Skyward Sword and A Link Between Worlds sold 3.86 million and 2.37 million copies, respectively. The 3DS remake of Ocarina of Time only sold a bit less than half of the Nintendo 64 version's numbers.
I'm sure there are a few other arguments for either side, but I think I've touched on the most important ones. Do you see Majora's Mask 3D surpassing the sales of the N64 original or will it struggle on store shelves?
