Without question the 2D Zelda games are much harder than their 3D counterparts. While the 3D games present a lot of difficult challenges, they pale in comparison to most of the 2D Zelda games; especially AoL, AlttP, and LA. The 3D games possess much more fluidity and give the player many more options when it comes to maneuverability; making them quite a bit easier than the rigidity and lack of moving options present in the 2D games. It’s always easier to move around in 3 dimensions as opposed to 2.

Personally the 2D Zelda games are harder than their 3D counterparts. Perhaps it has something to do with having less room for evasion but the 2D titles always have more going on screen at once and less obvious ways to avoid difficulties in terms of puzzles and combat. Take the Moldorm boss for example. Its 3D counterpart-Gohma-is a piece of cake. Moldorm, on the other had, should be equally easy to defeat in theory but is a pain in practice due to maneuvering so adroitly to avoid Link's attacks and land blows of its own. Majora's Mask proved that the third dimension can produce genuinely difficult experiences but the same gradient hasn't been revisited since.
