Water Temple Help Please?

Ok, so when I met up with the princess and she told me to follow, I did. Problem was, once I got to the top I immediately lowered the water then jumped down. Upon looking at some guides I realized I missed a key up there and I'm not sure how to get back up there or progress in general.

Have you unlocked the door to the central building in the main room on the first floor ?
