This article on Nintendo's golden opportunity to right the wrongs in BOTW's missed story and character potential sums up my hopes for the game.
I'll love the game regardless (IT'S A BOTW PREQUEL!!! <3) but if Nintendo wants to make fans care more about the main characters in BOTW, to really make an impact, especially for the inevitable tragic, death-filled ending, they need to develop the relationships between Link, Zelda, and the four Champions more. BOTW had so many unanswered questions, but here are two specific, relationship-concerned examples I'm talking about:
1. Did Mipha ever give her Zora armor to Link? It's left open-ended in her diary and never confirmed. This concerns her romantic feelings for Link, and if she ever "went through" with giving him such an intense gift. King Dorephan knew she made it for Link, and could've gotten it back without ever telling Muzu about it.
2. Did Revali ever go to the Spring of Wisdom to escort Zelda? This is also left unconfirmed in Revali's diary. It delves deep into Revali's conflicted character and relationship with Zelda, whether he'd be there for her at the most important moment. He's there when she comes back but did he escort her with the other Champions?
Both of these should be answered if Nintendo sticks to canon, and the moments leading up to the Great Calamity. These kinds of loaded moments are exactly the kind of intricate scenes that would add depth to the story, and the relationships of the characters. The four Champions became ghosts like King Rhoam when they died, unable to move on until Link saved Zelda. Their motivations must've been deep, and showing more of that would help make for a better story, IMO.
Are there any specific, unanswered questions you'd like to know? And what do you think the answers are to the above questions? I'll be disappointed if Nintendo skips past them but maybe they won't. Either way, I'm so excited for AOC and hope the Zelda team does/have done what they can to make us cry over the characters and make an impactful story.
Age of Calamity can right the wrongs of Breath of the Wild
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has the potential to right the wrongs of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with expanded story.
