Things you would improve in OoT

I was thinking about OoT today, and as it still is my second favorite Zelda game, there are a few things that I would change about it.

For example, I feel that it's lacking in the side quest department. Sometimes I find myself playing OoT and getting bored because I've already completed the entire game and I just feel...restless.

And also, the Water Temple. It has it's good points like the fight against Dark Link but as a whole, it's too confusing, and the boss is just...lame and tedius. Not to mention it has no personality whatsoever. But maybe that's just me.

So what would you change in OoT?

They literally gave you direction in the 3DS remake for Water Temple, Also if you go for 100% completion you'd find a bunch of stuff to do ^^.

Not really much i'd change to be honest, theres a reason it's aged well. Only thing i would change is give epona more use.

****, I vaguely remember the 3DS version lol. And I agree, it has aged well. :)

As for Epona, what did you have in mind?

OOT was pretty much perfection when it released which was when I played it. The only improvements that could have made it better were that the boss theme was repeated in Ghoma,Barinade,Phantom Ganon,Morpha,BongoBongo and Twinrova. They should have all had their own unique boss theme with the recurring theme used only for Ghoma.
The water temple was also tedious and difficult to navigate, having more distinct features in certain areas could have made it a bit less tiresome.

I'd make the game harder. Especially considering the time period it came from, Ocarina of Time is a relatively easy game, especially when compared to Majora's Mask (even the Water Temple isn't hard, it's just confusing and tedious. As long as you look at your map to see where you've missed chests or rooms that you haven't visited, it's extremely easy, even easier than some of the series's newer dungeons. The only time I got lost was when I had to get the key in the tower, and all I did was look at my map and I found it instantly). I'd also improve the dialogue. The game's dialogue is... well, it's from the 90's :P Modernize the dialogue so it's not as cheesy, make the game harder (and I don't mean adding more enemies, there isn't a single puzzle that really stumped me. At least the Master Quest version poses a bit of a challenge). Improve the graphics because, like in most games of that time, they haven't aged well. Orchestrate the soundtrack. Improve Epona's controls and give her more use. Make the bosses harder. Give Link and Saria at least a hugging scene.

All this being said, OoT is still a great game. I definitely don't think it deserves the 99 that metacritic gave it or its many perfect scores. If it was made today (with modernized graphics), it likely wouldn't get all the praise it did. Definitely wouldn't be the highest rated game of all. It was just revolutionary, and was a great game for its time. It's not as great as it might have been 17 years ago.

I'd like to see more weapons being usable on Epona, like in TP. That would be cool. Also, using more weapons underwater would be cool.

Having the masks actually do something like in MM would really spice things up.

The only other thing I can think of is giving some more uses to the Goron and Zora Tunic outside of the Fire and Water Temples (although, speaking of that, I now routinely play through the Water Temple without the Zora Tunic, so it's literally useless to me now). Having some kind of side quest or extra stuff that requires using either one.

Really, it's more of "this would be cool" than "this needs improving". I like just about everything in OoT.

oh I totally forgot, the gold skulltas. 100 is just waaaaay too much.

Well yes and no. The Skulltula hunt would be way less tedious if the interface was better. A system similar to the one in Link Between Worlds would have been much appreciated. As it is, the map shows you if you're still missing Skulltulas in a general area, but the map isn't very clear on what's part of an area and it doesn't tell you wether it's in the future or the past. Which brings me to my next point, the time travel mechanic. It's incredibly tedious to switch between timeframes, which isn't much of a problem during normal gameplay when you don't do it much. But if you're missing just a couple of spiders? It's hell looking for those.

Make it so the first half of the game isn't a drag. Make it so the side stuff is actually enjoyable. Heck, make the whole overworld feel less empty and bland. The best part of the game is the five temples in the adult section of the game, which is sad.

Also, people are saying the Water Temple was tedious and annoying, but I disagree. It is different from the others, as it is more of a connection of rooms compared to a series of rooms. But it is still enjoyable.

I would personally add an actual light temple, change forest to wind along with the puzzles, change water to ice and add a freeze and thaw puzzle along with changing the water level, hide the lens of truth in the shadow temple, beef up the bosses a bit, and add a time attack mode for each dungeon, instead of just the bosses.

Future reference: 45 in the First part of the game before adult hood 55 in the second part of the game, and yes you can get those 45 without using anything but what your given as a kid.

Really, you can? Without glitches and stuff? Well thanks for the headsup then, I'll keep that in mind.

Ocarina of Time 3D fixed the Water Temple, which was pretty much the consensus.

One other thing I would improve on OOT is Hyrule Field. It's just a big empty place with nothing to see or do.

Assuming this applies to the original N64 version only:
  • Skippable cutscenes
  • All Navi "heys" are optional, she can be "turned off".
  • Adult Temples should have harder enemies that do double damage or something
  • a better way to control the camera
  • Max ruppe waller from the start, or have a bigger starting one than just 99.
  • more open world/non-linear gameplay in the adult portion of the game.
  • better warping
  • better final dungeon
  • more combat focus overall.
