"Just recently finished the Last of US, and while its by no means a perfect or revolutionary game, the amount of detail and life in the ironically zombie filled wasteland is something to be praised.
It's a linear and sometimes scripted game, but the levels are made so alive and designed so cleverly you barely notice when playing through, it just feels as part of the normal world, instead of just an obvious game obstacle.
Not to mention the thousands of optional and well hidden content and dialogue you can find if you go exploring and think outside the box.
The Story I would normally call generic, but the characterization and more unique twists they pull off with the tired zombie formula is pretty impressive.
Just goes to show how much a new coat of paint can pretty up a picture.
The characters are so realistically portrayed, with astounding voice acting to boot, that it manages to draw you in to the scenarios which have really all been done with Zombies before.
It's not the scenario, its how these characters interact with it you want to see.
The gameplay is basically Uncharted, but with an amazingly well implemented crafting system that you have to actually make choices on crafting one thing over the other (Imagine that), and design on rewarding those for being stealthy and smart makes it a 10x more compelling experience than most "blast through the enemies like the bullet sponge you are" games nowadays (Infinite...). Though the AI can be pretty hit and miss. The enemy AI can go from being ingenious to incredibly damn stupid. For example one time this guy refused to come out of cover like every other cover shooter and instead tried to flank me. I was left in awe. Next thing you know I strangled this guy's buddy 3 ft away from him and he never noticed. I was left in awe.
It's whole escort mission thing is a bit of a copout, in similar ways to how it is in Bioshock Infinite. As in she's completely invisible and your enemies just ignore her (Which is barely an escort mission technically). BUT, she's automatically better than what Infinite offers because, not only is the girl herself realistically characterized and interesting, but she doesn't help you out in the most distracting way possible. And, despite what i said before, CAN and IS caught in situations where you need to protect her and its not infuriating, because she helps you cross obstacles and figures things out as well. She helps in her own realistic way.
The games can be rather unpolished though, with random glitches out the wazoo. They can be pretty immersion breaking at times too (My friend discovered a God mode glitch).
Other than that though it's a very compelling game and experience that is probably my GOTY as of now.
