Breath of the Wild Supposing all subplots were utterly absorbing, how much would you want?

I think the textbook definition would say that the Divine Beasts are main quests, but then so is taking a picture of the Kakariko Great Fairy Fountain and finding all the memories, something I consider side content. Anything not required to see the credits of the game is, to me, side content.
So like, everything not in the any% run is side content

This all depends on the definition of the word ‘main’, because if it’s not synonymous with the word ‘necessary’, there’s some subjective wriggle room to say it simply refers to the ‘more important’ parts of the game, as intended by the makers. You could also say that extended endings aren’t necessary, but they are main.

I think that what qualifies as a "main quest" differs depending on the game. If the game lists it as a main quest, it's a main quest so long as its necessary. But if there is a mission that is absolutely essential to the completion of the game and is not listed as a main quest specifically, its still a main quest. They simply didn't identify it. BotW has a different definition of "necessary", seeing as almost everything is optional. I would say what they listed as main quests are, in fact, main quests. That's just because they are essential if you're playing the game straight.

I don’t think botw uses the word ‘necessary’. Yes, they talk about main quests, but those refer to importance, not necessity. Besides the intro shrines, the only necessary quest is defeating Ganon. That’s it.
