I've been thinking about the Sages from Ocarina/Wind Waker and I've developed a couple of theories related to them that I think fleshes out the story of the Sages a little better.
My first theory is about Kasuto, which is the only town in Zelda II that isn't named after a Sage(/doesn't have a Sage named after it, depending on if you're looking at chronologically or by game release dates), besides Mido who at least exists. My theory is that Kasuto is the third Master Sword Sage (alongside either Fado and Laruto or whoever preceded them), the Sage of Ice. We know that a third Sage was planned in Wind Waker, except it would've been a second Sage of Fire, but since Fire is already taken by Darunia as a normal Sage, I thought Ice (which was replaced by Water in Ocarina of Time, just like Wind was replaced by Forest) would work better. Kasuto would be a Goron (lining up with the Kokiri and Zoras being the other two Master Sword Sages as well as the other two possessors of the Spiritual Stones). He (or his descendant) was the last Master Sword Sage to be targeted by Ganondorf, but managed to flee because he had heard about the deaths of Fado and Laruto. If Ganondorf had successfully killed all three Sages, the Master Sword would cease to exist entirely.
My second theory is about the Master Sword Sages pre-Wind Waker. It is (at least, according to ZeldaWiki) widely believed that Fado from Ocarina of Time is the Sage of Wind from the Era of the Hero of Time, so does this mean there were different Sages for the Sage of Earth and Sage of Ice, too? I'm going with yes, and I think that the Sage of Earth may be Ruto's mother (which, in turn, may be Rutela, depending on whether or not you believe the Zora King is the same across the two games), who is never seen but gave Ruto the Zora Sapphire to protect. Most people seem to believe she's dead (which makes the Rutela theory seem strange), but I think she's just off in a temple praying. She can't leave the temple, or she'll risk the destruction of the Master Sword, so she can't be expected to rule over Zora's Domain. I don't know who the Sage of Ice would be, but it could be the Hylian counterpart of the Goron Elder from Majora's Mask. It's a stretch though.
So what do you think? Do you have any Sage theories you want to share?
