Let's Talk Game of the Year

I really do hope CoD : Ghosts takes the franchise back to where it was in the before and during cod4 days, refreshing and fun to play with finally some new creative stuff and earning the GOTY award. Although who knows, maybe it's just another money milking machine with a better disguise this time. If not CoD then I'd guess either GTA V or The Last of Us. Sadly though the main reason behind a win of either of these two games would have to do a fair bit with fangirls and hype around them, don't get me wrong, great games, but personally feel like they are giants amongst ants when it comes to gaming of 2013 and other great games get left out.

Might as well throw my early-ish opinion here.

This year has been slightly weird, I've probably played less games this year than I have in past years, mostly because I've found myself lacking interest and whatnot. However, a few titles have stuck out to me, but the two greats are, with no surprise: GTA V and Bioshock Infinite . I think both games speak for themselves and I'm a huge GTA fan so it's kind of obvious that I would pick that game.

I do plan on possibly getting a few more titles this year - I'd love to try out The Last of Us or even Beyond, despite its, rather, mixed reviews. I'd just like to get a wider scope to make my choice come the end of the year.

Then there are also a few titles that have yet to be released; two of which stand out to me: Zelda BLT (ALBW) and Watchdogs. Both are looking great thus far and who knows, maybe they could surpass my current pick.

Lol at all the GTA fanboys. It's a good series, but it opts for gameplay over story. Not saying that's a bad thing (hell, that's what every Nintendo game does), but it does put it at a disadvantage for GOTY.

Speaking of which, the only GOTY that matters if the BAFTAs. It has a sort of professional charm about it. Unless Watch Dogs turns out to be great, TLOU has this in the bag. I still expect GTAV to win Best Action/Adventure Game.

I'm a big fan of the series but I'm not a "fanboy" or the context that people use it in. I'm simply defending the game where I felt is should be defended, I'd happily state it's drawbacks. Plus the story is rather strong in this game and the voice acting is top notch, it's not on a level of a story focused game but it's pretty close - as I said before, for a game where story is small in the grand scheme that's a pretty good achievement.

However, why does that put it at a disadvantage for GOTY? Story is just one part of a game, many games have one this prize with weak or very little story included.

It's almost always the story-driven games that get GOTY. The exceptions are if it's The Elder Scrolls or (hilariously enough) Grand Theft Auto.
Skyward Sword hardly delivered a "Grade A" story, yet it won multiple GOTY awards as did Portal 2 oh and let's not forget Journey. A few more off the top of my head would be Fallout 3 and Call of Duty 4. There are no exceptions, a game is not judged entirely on story.

Coming from the guy who doesn't recall... I would never deny Call of Duty being successful. And you and Axel were on the same boat. I swear, you jumped at every moment to defend him.

Right...

I would remember saying CoD is good, because I've always considered it to be on a steady decline post-Modern Warfare.

Portal 2 and Journey actually tell pretty awesome stories, especially Journey. The story is told through the gameplay in both of them, and in Journey, that's pretty much the entire point. It depicts the Hero's Journey almost flawlessly.

Skyward Sword also pretty much only won GOTY POLLS voted on by gamers. Nearly every major publication was sucking Skyrim's D like it was their birthright. The only one I can think of right off the bat that wasn't is Edge.

I agree with you there, but, Portal 2 and Journey had awesome stories. :P Different places vote different games because there's different merits people look for in a GOTY. Some people look at what is technically the best. Some look at what's innovate. Some look at simply the experience it gave them. And the best places look at all of those things!

Me personally, I look at the 3rd option the most. I care about the experience, which is really everything about the game, but the lack of one thing doesn't ruin it. So, Skyrim didn't pack much of a story (though I enjoyed the Dark Brotherhood one) but it was just so much fun! :D And likewise, The Walking Dead delivered an amazing story but it was hardly the most stimulating gameplay experience. But that was my last year's GOTY by a mile.

Portal 2 and Journey weren't story focused games though; the latter game was heavily based on gameplay and puzzle solving while the former had a very subtle story. I'm not trying to say both didn't have great stories or the ones I mentioned above, but I'm basically saying that a game doesn't have to be story focused to win.

Well, when a game wins that doesn't have a "Grade A" story, it usually means that it had revolutionary gameplay (i.e. Skyward Sword, COD4).Think about it. Dishonored v. Mass Effect 3. ME3 definitely had the better gameplay, but Dishonored beat it.
I've never played Mass Effect before so I'm not sure about gameplay, but isn't that series heavily known for its story and lore? Plus Dishonored did have a rather good story but it wasn't an amazing one, I thought the gameplay was much more the focus.

Yeah I'd agree there but I still don't see them games as ones which plot was captivating. I kind of see Journey as a niche game, there's nothing much like it, it's subtle storytelling was masterful but I don't see it in the same league as the likes of some games which put there full emphasis on plot etc.

Oh right. I didn't get that cos, well, does anyone actually think that? :P Games with bad stories win GOTY all the time! It's just that a lot of the best games seem to have a good story too but they win cos they're good games, not just 'cos they have a good story!

I tend to like story-driven games the most. I keep playing games I have a kind of attachment to more than others. If the story sucks and I hate the characters, I find the game easier to put down. :P

I'm going to be upfront about this and say that I have played very few games that released in 2013. This has a been a year when I have gone off gaming, for the most part. I think it was E3 that did it, but that's a story for another time. I can't and won't comment on the likes of Bioshock Infinite, The Last of Us, or Rayman Legends and I won't be getting Assassin's Creed IV, Watchdogs, or Super Mario 3D World, so I'll leave those out as well. You might be wondering why I've even bothered posting since I've ignored most of this year's top contenders for Game of the Year awards.

To be brief, E3 showed me why I've stopped caring about video games over the past few years, while Nintendo have been doing everything they can to remind me why I fell in love with them in the first place. I won't bore you with the details but the ending is that, while I know this hasn't got an ice cube's chance in Hell of winning, I personally would give GOTY 2013 to 3DS Streetpass.

I am fully aware that Streetpass itself is not a game, but it was simpler to type that than list all of the actual Streetpass games themselves. Nintendo released four new games for Streetpass earlier this year and they deserve the title, as far as I am concerned. They're all just really fun, for one thing. That's probably the most important part. They also show how Streetpass can be used in different ways, whether it's to save the galaxy from robot pirates, chase ghosts out of a spooky mansion, or simply cultivate a beautiful garden.

Really though, the reason I would give Streetpass the title goes beyond the games themselves. I fell in love with video games as a child because they gave me common ground with other kids and enabled me to make friends. I still remember when Pokémon first came out in the UK and every single child in school became friends through the game. No one was mean to anyone else, no one would stick only with the people they knew; everyone had something in common with everyone else and it brought us closer together. That feeling of community has all but vanished from video games for me. The rise of online multiplayer killed going to a friend's house to play together. Being exposed to aggressive, simple-minded, hate-filled people on the ends of microphones dulled the spark of saving the world. Overly simplistic tutorials and invasive HUDs made me feel like I was being treated as a child with too few brain cells to rub together to make a fire. As my friends grew up, many of them packed away their consoles because they no longer had the time to play as much, what with jobs and University and, in some cases, families. This is why I wouldn't consider GTA V for GOTY; here is this huge, detailed world of fun and possibility, and yet not a single person I want to share it with.

Streetpass has given me that feeling of community back. If you own a 3DS, you are already playing. All you need to do to play is be near another owner. Streetpass has encouraged me to go to specialised 'meet ups' and events in the city (where I even won a Mario Kart trophy in a little tournament). You get to know people, you get to have fun anywhere, and it's so simple that it'd be harder to not get involved. To put it bluntly, it makes walking down the street exciting, and not a single other game I can name has made real life more enjoyable.

That's just me though. Actual publications and awards bodies will go with the likes of Watchdogs (I presume), The Last of Us, or GTA V.

Sure, if a game where the core gameplay/missions are nothing but shooting, magic, and occasionally doing both can qualify as GOTY quality... which it shouldn't.

B-but it makes sense because quantum mechanics!

We need some Bioshock Infinite love in this thread. Honestly, it's a fantastic game. I regretfully have not played The Last of Us, nor Grand Theft Auto V, but I do know that Bioshock Infinite is certainly one of the best shooters I have played in a long time. While all three games greatly interest me, I can certainly say that Bioshock Infinite was a fantastic game. I'm not saying it's 100% confirmed GoTY, but I do think it should be at least looked at.

I'm actually confused as to where all the die hard fans for the game went? I haven't seen a positive thread for it anywhere since around June or so. We all know /v/ hates it with a passion, but that's for the reason of,
1. Ken Levine is Jewish and /v/ has a lot of /pol/ people leaking into it
2. It's popular and therefore not hardcore in their eyes.

I think it should be considered, but I'm not claiming it's GoTY. I just want to know where all of the people who loved it at release are now.

GotY: Call of Duty Ghosts

I believe CoDGhosts is most deserving of GotY as of now, the game looks incredibly deep (especially for a CoD!) and even interesting! It also is the first actual overhaul since CoD4, which is good to hear. All other games released this year simply haven't impressed me - though Ghosts hasn't released itself.

edit: I predict The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto V to be the only active candidates for GotY, which is actually a shame for me because I have no interest in any of those games.

Eww... no way COD is gonna get game of the year. It should be GTA 5 of The Last of Us.
