I think it has merit, so long as medical organizations view it as something to be treated rather than something to be abstained from. My biggest concern is that lawyers and politicians use it as an excuse to ban, regulate and censor - and you know they will given the slightest excuse. This is justification enough for them.

20 years ago this argument wouldn't have any merit, but ever since World of Warcraft (arguably Diablo before it) inadvertently stumbled upon gamings first rudimentary techniques for psychological manipulation to keep players 'hooked', the industry has been refining their understanding and implementation of the same techniques casinos use to keep their customers addicted. And today it's out of hand.

Whether or not video game addiction is actually a thing, however, I do not know. There's only one person I know who might be "addicted" to facebook games but I wouldn't go that far. She's obsessed but I wouldn't say she's addicted. I remember the UN or WHO or AMA or some such brought this up some years ago and they voted nay for lack of evidence.
