Spirit Tracks Cannot Hang on Propeller - Help

In the Ocean Temple 5th flr, I have the whip and can launch the propeller but cannot hold onto it. The whip catches but then keeps letting go. Am I doing something wrong or am I missing something?

Hold down the stylus when you grab the propeller. You can't just tap it, you actually have to hold it down.
