A brave warrior who only fights for himself

What would you think of Link or any other character who is brave and fights through much suffering, misery, battles, and challenges, but only does so to gain what he/she desires? When this character has to fight for someone else or in a situation where he/she cannot get what he/she wants, then he/she just cowers and gives up. Even though this would be a narcissist warrior who is only brave and powerful when the very thing he/she desires is within his/her grasp, would you still consider such a warrior great? Or is it only warriors like Link who are the great warriors since they stay and fight even when things don't go their way?

Link is in fact a selfish narcissist warrior himself and not the noble hero people think. Don't assume for a minute he is doing this for others. He adventures for the self gratification it brings, to relish in the bloodlust, devouring his enemies hearts and to break pots and pillage.

And all those damsels he helps...he's in it for the poon.

I'm imagining a gambler-- he only wants to maximize risk when he'll reap a benefit. It's not that he's too cowardly to act for the sake of others, it's that he's simply thinking logically, matching risk to reward.

Not a bad idea, but it's been done before.
