At least in the EUR version of the game it is not possible... Maybe it is one of the few things that changes from version to version

You need the lens to open the chests, if you don't use them, the game assumes there are no chests there

As far as chests are concerned, you need the lens or the game will act as if there isn't any chest

It is not impossible, not at all... But you do need the Lens of Truth to beat Bongo-Bongo, I guess
