I suppose, But even in the more Linear games isn't it still there?
The aches of most fans about the linear games should alone state that exploration is vital. Twilight Princess had a lot to offer if you'd look for it. Skyward Sword would've been near perfect if the sky had more to offer. Spirit Tracks proved that confining transportation to rails really limits the felt size of the world. Phantom Hourglass, though not quite as expansive as Wind Waker had it's own share of secrets and treasure.
I still feel that it is a key element. While there has been a push away from it, I feel that the push is what is hurting the series.
