RAISING THE CURTAIN

Acquire the assets! Synergise the servers! It’s time we leveraged our key pillars with a paradigm-branching, hi-octane content update!
A wild logo appears.
Ahem. One year ago more than 80,000 fans funded the Yooka-LayleeKickstarter and it was an amazing and proud time for all involved. Soon after we decided to ‘go dark’ and focus on delivering a game worthy of your spectacular support. ‘The next time you see Yooka-Laylee,’ we said, ‘we want it to look representative of the final target we’re shooting for.’

Well, here it is. Today – finally – we’re revealing a few of the star performers from our Yooka-Laylee coming out show; an all-new cast of characters from the Playtonic Universe, a deep story to discover, a roster of irresistibly shiny collectibles to seek out and huge, stunning worlds to explore.

Over the past year the Playtonic team has tripled in size, moved office and quietly slaved away on what would become the final form of Yooka-Laylee. You can see some of the results of our work below and over on the Yooka-Laylee game page. There’s lots to talk about – and today is just the preliminary act. Over the next few weeks we’ll hope to wow you with increasingly dazzling dance numbers, first clicking our heels in the new Edge Magazine on May 26, which will be packed full of details and purchasable in both print and digital flavours.Soon after you’ll see eyes-on reports of the final Yooka-Laylee appear on your favourite online channels and video platforms, quickly followed by the hijinks of the Electronic Entertainment Expo. We will of course ensure that Kickstarter backers are kept fully up to date with everything we reveal going forward. One thing we’re not quite ready to reveal yet is the game’s final, day-and-date release plan, but we’re getting close. The Playtonic team is working towards the same release window penned last year, but as fans of some of our past work will attest, we’re a group committed to releasing games only when they’re polished, complete and at the quality level you expect. As soon as we’re confident we’ve ticked all of those boxes, we’ll inform our backers directly of when to mark their calendars. So without further ado, this is what Yooka-Laylee looks like today.

A CORPORATE CONUNDRUM…

“IF YOU THOUGHT THE CHALLENGES SO FAR WERE TOUGH, WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE MY OUTLOOK FOR Q4 OF THE GAME…”
“A FLURRY OF EXCITEMENT FILLED THE FACTORY FLOOR. EVERYONE HAD ASSEMBLED, FROM THE TOP-TIER BOSS CHARACTERS TO THE TEA MINION FROM SECTOR C. IT WAS FINALLY HERE; TAKEOVER DAY.“THE INGENIOUS TECH FIRM QUACK CORP HAD BEEN SUBJECT TO A HOSTILE SWOOP BY DIABOLICAL PUBLISHING CORPORATION IN HIVORY TOWERS. TOGETHER THEY WERE ABOUT TO LAUNCH THEIR MOST DEVIOUS SCHEME YET, ALL UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF CUNNING BUZZNESS EXECUTIVE CAPITAL B!”

Yooka and Laylee’s adventure will take them deep inside the work halls of a baneful business, as the buddy-duo seek out the magical Pagies required to explore the mysterious Grand Tomes. The dexterous pair will seek to unlock the ancient secrets of these bewitching books, as they battle to thwart corporate creep Capital B and his devious scheme to absorb all of the world’s literature… and convert them into pure profit.

Our ambition with Yooka-Laylee is to create a story and cast of characters that will live on as part of future Playtonic Games, so you can be sure there will be plenty of secrets, back stories and punch lines to discover when you join the Lizard and Bat on their epic adventure.

COLLECT-EM-UP 2.0
Yooka-Laylee will introduce a roster of shiny collectibles with gameplay progression at their core (as well as other, more valuable materials). Tasty Butterfly Energy will refill the player’s health and the brand new power meter, which is designed to empower fun and challenging platforming gameplay while avoiding the all-too-occasional tedium of resource management.

In their adventure through Capital B’s corporate lair, Yooka and Laylee will explore land, air and sea in search of Pagies and their power to unlock – and expand – the magical Grand Tomes held captive in Hivory Towers.

Using the hundreds of collectible Quills discovered during their travels, the buddy-duo will purchase and unlock moves from the serpent salesman Trowzer, which they can choose to do in virtually any order that the player decides. This is just one way which Yooka-Laylee empowers player choice, in addition to the ability to expand and make larger the worlds you’ve already explored, and the unique Tonic gameplay modifiers which can be used to customise your play style.Look out for much more on the collectibles of Yooka-Laylee in upcoming media previews.

A CAST TO LAST
Throughout their adventure Yooka and Laylee will meet (or beat) a huge cast of memorable characters brought to life by the art and audio teams behind legendary platform games.

This month we’ll be discussing a pair of new supporting characters destined to join the Playtonic Universe; the hapless, multi-limbed scientist Dr. Puzz and her traitorous former colleague Dr. Quack.

The latter is a ruthless, exosuit-wearing fowl, who’s making the best of a bad situation under the corporate rule of Capital B. The good doctor wasn’t always this unpleasant, but the ruthless takeover of his Quack Corp organisation has persuaded Quack to concoct all manner of crude inventions to satisfy the demands of his new boss – and the shareholders, of course.

Quack’s sweet, naeve prodigy, Dr. Puzz proved far more morally rigid than her former colleague, breaking ties with Quack Corp as soon as the exosuits started stirring – and taking her own inventions with her. The tentacled technician – designed by Ed ‘Mumbo Jumbo’ Bryan – is the gateway to all of Yooka-Laylee’s wild and wonderful transformations, which we’ll be revealing in the near future.

OPEN THE TOYBOX
The wait is almost over… the Toybox is coming – and we’re happy to finally confirm that the standalone gameplay experience will be available in July for Kickstarter backers who opted for appropriate tiers.

So why has it taken so long? Quite simply, our plans for the Toybox have expanded beyond the web-based, single-room play thing we originally planned and it’s now a much more significant chunk of playable content.

As promised in our Kickstarter campaign, the Toybox isn’t a traditional ‘demo’, but a self-contained, spoiler-free sandbox designed to give Yooka-Laylee backers a taste of the platforming to come in the final game. There are plenty moves to try, custom-built props to play with, secrets to discover and yes, shiny collectibles to hunt out.

We appreciate your patience and hope you agree the wait was worthwhile when you’re jumping around in our sandbox in a number of weeks’ time.

Yes this does mean Trowzer from this video is actually in the game. I think that's pretty cool.

I will quote @Lozjam's post too so it's all here.

Rejoice Nintendo fans! Even though Nintendo might be disappointing us at this years E3, there is still hope. Our amazing developers at Rareware errm, Playtonic has just cited that they are bringing big news to this E3.
http://www.gamnesia.com/news/playtonic-games-will-be-at-e3-this-year-with-big-news-coming-soon

Get yourselves ready to finally see a close to finished product this E3, as last year was extremely early and was only around 3 months in development. Yooka Laylee could very well make itself to be the greatest 3D platformer of all time built by the all-star cast of RareWare, developers of the greatest of games such as the Banjo Kazooie series, Conker, Donkey Kong Country, Perfect a Dark and many more.

It is a good thing that Playtonic stepped up to the plate, as Nintendo seemingly refuses to support the Wii U in a real way at this point. Furthermore, Nintendo hasn't even bothered to make a proper 3D Platformer for the system as well. So good on you my British Chaps!

Yooka Laylee will also be coming to XBO and PS4.

It is likely that the title will be delayed, as their Kickstarter demo still hasn't surfaced. My bet is on a December release. However, I think it is worth the wait, as we can finally have a true successor to Banjo and Kazooie, as Rareware hasn't bothered to make one since 2001 due to M$ ruining the company forever.

I just love how the entire game of Yooka Laylee is allegory of M$ completely ruining Rare and how they took their art and made it only "profit". I just love that.

Agreed 100%.

@Lozjam just take a look at this:

It's too big to show here (just lcick the link :) ) but it's a nice Y-L imahge that Playtonic have made. Nice for a desktop wallpaper or similar.
Playtonic make stuff like this because it's what the people wanted. MS (Rare) on the other hand only milk older Rare games (ie the Rare Replay collection) and make poor quality games like many bad Kinect games and the equally bad Nuts and Bolts.

You know what really impressed me about Playtonic? In their kickstarter one of the stretch goals was "polish the game to the nth degree". They understand that too many crazy stretch goals is not deliverable in a decent time frame. Playtonic would rather use the money to make a better core gameplay experience. That's where many kickstarter projects get to me, they focus so much on the stretch goals, they do not spend enough time/moey on making the core gameplay experience polished and solid.

One could argue MS buying Bungie is the same thing. Bungie before MS made some very good games. Pathways Into Darkness, the Marathon Trilogy and the Myth games were industry leading games at the time. Some fo the few games made primarialy for the Mac pre OS X. Post MS buyout, they have made Oni, Halo (and sequels) and Destiny. Good games, but Halo 5 did feel a little milking the cash cow.

MS do a lot right. I am a MS fan. But gaming is something MS does not do all that well. That includes games they make and games thatcompanies they buy make. I think MS would be better served to keep the bigger studios making games for PC and Xbox independently. That will help the Xbox and gaming PC market grow more than anything MS can directly do by meddling and interfering.

GRANT KIRKHOPE MUSIC!
http://www.grantkirkhope.com
He posted something amazing.

The absolutely best thing about Kirkhope's music is that depending on the area you are in, the music changes dynamically. He posted an example of this in a sneak peak at the variations of Yooka Laylee's main theme...

Go to the bottom of the examples in the website and you can get it for yourself!

Oh my... My Rare Wanker is up and it won't go down.... I don't think

Which to me is a darn shame because I've 0.0000% interest in a game by ex-Rare devs who are going to make a bunch of fart jokes, whereas I've a TON of interest in a Mega Man spiritual successor.

That's just me.

I was initially kind of upset that I missed the Mighty No. 9 kickstarter back when it was a thing. Now I'm glad I never gave them my money. What a disaster of a development cycle.

The one thing I'm holding out for is that it's indeed more of an X successor than a Classic successor, but even then, it just doesn't look all that compelling.

Some more Yooka-Laylee info about what the game will actually contain.
http://nintendoeverything.com/yooka-laylee-gets-another-set-of-fresh-details/

Here’s an overview of the different collectibles:
  • Ghosts can be found in each world; one hides, another attacks you, and a more elusive spirit requires you to chase and catch it
  • 200 quills scattered across the world, spread across race circuits and along vast, undulating minecart tracks
  • Tokens unlock the eight multiplayer arcade games hosted by Rextro, which can be found in the main menu and support up to 4 players
  • Tonics: RPG-style modifiers that also act as in-game accomplishments; ex: reduce power consumption of Yooka’s role, which could be attached to something like killing 100 enemies
  • There’s a pickup which triggers a transformation exclusive to that particular world

At first, your impact is relatively small: spitting out a Splash Berry to feed a raincloud sees it generate a waterfall that fills a dry riverbed, opening up new areas to explore. Choose a Frost Berry instead, and the river will freeze over, giving you access to a harder race across a slippier surface. But while you can move onto the next area once you’ve collected enough Pagies – the equivalent to Banjo-Kazooie’s Jiggies – you can also spend them on expanding the environment. This bolts on a huge extra chunk of level furniture, with a towering monument that dwarfs what was there before (and which begs to be scaled), and opens up a broader range of activities, this time set at a higher difficulty to test the platforming pluck of more thorough explorers.

  • Regain health by collecting butterflies
  • Refill the power meter by eating butterflies
  • New Game+ mode will be included where all moves are unlocked from the beginning
  • Spend Quills to extend Yooka and Laylee’s move sets; ex: sonar shot for Laylee which fires translucent waves and triggers invisible platforms to reach a previously inaccessible temple area
  • When you unlock a new world, Trowzer will give you a new power as a way of thanking you for letting him expand his business
  • Challenges won’t be repeated across the different worlds; the team wants to constantly surprise players
  • The challenge ramps up in the second world, which has a wintry theme
I made you guys a little infographic for you guys. Of which, definitely proves... Well.. I think you can see for yourself.
I think you should also add in Bloodstained and these differences too.

Percent funded
Mighty No.9 percent funded: 427%
Yooka-Laylee Percent funded: 1194%
Bloodstained: 1109%

Platforms initually included (before any stretch goals)
Mighty No.9: PC
Yooka-Laylee: Windows, OS X, Linux, XB1, PS4 and Wii U (The stretch goal was only for a simultaneous day one release for all platforms)
Bloodstained: PC, XB1, PS4

Time since the kickstarter finished
Mighty No.9: 2 years, 8 months, 25 days
Yooka-Laylee: One Year, 25 days
Bloodstained: One year, 21 days (based of the dates @Lozjam used in his infographic)

Going by this Playtonic wes the only one that originally intended to have their games on a Nintendo console. The other two wanted more stretch $$ to do so.

Still @Lozjam thanks for creating the infographic you did.

Which to me is a darn shame because I've 0.0000% interest in a game by ex-Rare devs who are going to make a bunch of fart jokes, whereas I've a TON of interest in a Mega Man spiritual successor.

That's just me.
I had interest in both, but the whole Mighty No.9 but initially releasing on a Nintendo console (before stretch goals) totally turned me off Mighty No.9. Also that game is a slight risk as this is not Capcom but another random not so well known developer group making this.

Yooka-Laylee on the other hand is being made by a bunch of industry experts and a apiritual successor to the great 3D collectathon games of the 90's and 2000's would be a great thing to play. I get it that Yooka-Laylee is not your thing. But there is no need to have a go at it either. That's just poor form.

Bloodstained is totally not my thing, but others really are interested in it. I'm not paying out Bloodstained. That game is being made by a pro of the industry. The only worry I have with Bloodstained is that there is way to many stretch goals and they will delay the game's release. I didn't back it because no initial Nintendo release (before stretch goals) and because it's not my type of game.

Happy Friday! Allow us to rein in the weekend by introducing you to two of the latest characters in the Playtonic universe; the hapless, multi-limbed scientist Dr. Puzz and her traitorous former colleague Dr. Quack!

Fits the bill.

In Yooka-Laylee, Dr. Quack is a ruthless, exosuit-wearing fowl, who’s making the best of a bad situation under the corporate rule of Capital B. The good doctor wasn’t always this unpleasant, but the ruthless takeover of his Quack Corp organisation has persuaded Quack to concoct all manner of crude inventions to satisfy the demands of his new boss – and the shareholders, of course.

Experiencing tentacle problems.

Quack’s sweet, naive prodigy, Dr.

In case you missed the hoo-ha last week, we unveiled the first Yooka-Laylee screenshots from the game’s final form and laid out our plans for the coming weeks.

Soon you’ll see eyes-on reports of Yooka-Laylee appear on your favourite online channels and video platforms, quickly followed by the hijinks of the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

In the meantime, for readers of Edge magazine it's published an eyes-on preview of the game which you can view in print and digital editions. Look forward to more Yooka-Laylee content soon – and thanks for your support.

Is it bad that I hope Yooka-Laylee will be extremely similar to Banjo?

I'm also hoping it does really well on the Wii U.
