WARNING! CONTAINS MATURE CONENT!
No spoilers that you wouldn't see in the trailer.
Okay, so has anyone seen this movie, if so please give me your opinion. Last night Rish and I watched Splice. For anyone who hasn't seen it, go to youtube and watch the
trailer cause it is a crazy looking trailer, and also the reason I bought the movie.
For anyone who hasn't seen it or can't watch the trailer it is a movie about a geneticist couple who are genetically engineering new life forms. They are being pushed by their funders to produce a specific protein to be used in the medical field, but they can't quite get it right. So because they need this protein and because they are curious and want to they add human DNA to the mix and create a life form that is only partly human. From there the movie as about its growth and the social/ethical/political and emotional problems they have created by making this creature. Also it kinda gets out of hand and they try to add a minor horror aspect to it.
Now. As a science person my mind was running 50 different directions at once with all the concepts and problems they were presenting as well as the science. I really enjoyed that aspect of it. However, they threw in a number of things I didn't believe needed to be in the movie to make their point. IF YOU HAVE YOUNG AND SENSITIVE MINDS AND EYES...READ NO MORE! There was a large element of intercourse and rape in the movie that I feel really had no place in the movie. It almost felt as though they added it because the movie was rated R anyway, so why not do it. Also, the general ending of the plot was kind of a flop. They had this great build and development of all these issues and then it kind of just fizzled out. With this horror aspect that came from nowhere.
I would recommend it to anyone with a strong stomach that likes ethics of science, but as a stand alone movie I thought it was really average. Three and a half stars.
EDIT: Oh, I see we are doing out of 10. soo.... 6/10 As an overall movie. As a science movie 7/10
