Game Help [PS3] - How Does Offline Splitscreen Work for Resident Evil 5?

Hello everyone, I recently bought Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition for the PS3, but I've a question regarding offline splitscreen. I know how to activate it - just press start on a second controller - but how does the game go from there? As I do not have a PS3 on me, all I could do for the four or so years since RE5 originally released is listen to rumors and little sayings here and there.

Specifically, I want to know if, when you activate splitscreen, do you pool your items with the second player or are you two separate inventories?

Furthermore, is it possible to have two PSN accounts active on the same PS3?

As I've the game, you DO pool items, even when playing online. It's sad but true.

There unfortunately is no manner in which you can play with two IDs on at once. :I
