Favourite detectives

When i was at uni i was big into the cinematic 1940 noir movement, i've always enjoyed detective stories (grew up with family members watching Murder, She Wrote, Miss Marple, Midsummer Murders and my favourite Jonathan Creek).

But the 1940s hard boiled detectives, straight talking, no prisoners, world weary shady justice dealers were my favourite. The Big Sleep is one of my favourite films of all time and in my opinion the best detective movie of all time (which isnt hard considering the source material of Raymond Chandler's novel was such an influential trend setter).

As far as TV goes Idris Elba's Luther tops my chart (season four being 2/3 episodes long was a slap in the face though).


There are a lot of different breeds of detective, most prefer the realistic Law and Order approach (detective Stabler was awesome in SVU) but which are your favourites?

Do you prefer detectives in novels or movies/TV?

Which genre of detective, sci-fi, noir, fantasy?

Or do you not like detective stories at all?

Most of my experience with detective stories comes from film and television. Throughout the years I've watched and enjoyed Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett, Foyle's War, Poirot, Midsummer Murders, Mr. Holmes with Ian McKellen, Wallander, Ms. Marple, Murphy's Law, Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr., The Mentalist, and Life on Mars among others. Generally I tend to prefer the British detective story productions over the American ones, but of course there are awesome ones from both geographic regions. My absolute favourite, however, is BBC's Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch.

I do indeed like detective stories. And my favourite detectives are all on TV: Columbo, Midsummer Murders, Johnathan Creek, Poirot, Miss Marple, Life on Mars, Sherlock Holmes and Luther.

For more classic detective characters, I love Poirot. If we look at more modern characters, then Veronica Mars and Kate Beckett
