They hated it.

The word tasted like acid in their mouths, burning their throats even after it was uttered. Destiny.

Zelda hated it because it forced her to stay away, submit. Drop to her knees or flee, in hopes of survival. She despised the way it made her so aware of the painful truth. The word stalked her every move.

Ganon hated the way it defied him. His ways of evil were all put at stake because of of a stupid prophecy or dream. His efforts crumbled after periods of time, the Goddesses laughing in his face. It showed him the painful consequence of living this life. The word stalked his every move.

They knew, better than anyone, about loss and gain. He held Power, her Wisdom. Combined, deadly, separated, forever alone. They watched Link struggle on his quest, one step closer to the saving she wished didn't need to happen, and one step closer to his demise, which he wished wasn't part of the future.

His Courage blinded him from emotional pain. The silent hero, forever trapped in time. He didn't feel resentment as they had. He was good, and they held darkness within their souls. He did his duty happily.

And they watched each other sometimes, seeing the pain pain and fear and hatred reflected in their eyes. He never hated her. Just he kingdom. She never hated him. Just his acts.

And when her title was spoken, she would shiver, not at all prepared for what it meant, even when the fires of war calmed down. "The Princess of Destiny."

He loathed his title, for it was said with disgust and mockery. He would spit when it was spoken, trapped in his prison. "The Evil King."

The word tasted like acid in their mouths, burning their throats even after it was uttered. Destiny.

They hated it.
