Zelda Discussion For Today: The Music Of Zelda
Posted on March 24 2012 by Nathanial Rumphol-Janc
Yes, I know it’s strange for me to post a discussion question. It’s about music though, so being the one who writes Zelda music out for Erica’s Ocarina Experience, I figure this isn’t too strange of me.
When I think about the strengths of the Zelda series, I think of a lot of different points. Story, puzzles, swords, magic, legend…but one of the biggest strengths for me personally is the music. When I listen to soundtracks from the Zelda series, both old and new, I get a different myriad of emotion and nostalgia. As the series evolves and changes, so does its music.
The music, although evolving, has always stayed true to its roots. The opening theme on the NES in The Legend of Zelda, despite its less orchestrated sound, is adored by any Zelda fan and is known by non-gamers too (my father even recognizes the tune and he doesn’t even know what game site I work on). The Song of the Hero has been altered in just about every Zelda game, which can be shown in this video.
I could just go through all of the songs and how they are different in each game. But then I would be sitting here for hours and hours and probably get side tracked and start writing music instead of writing an article. Thus, I’m going to hone in on my own personal favorite soundtrack.
My favorite soundtrack out of every Zelda game has to be from The Wind Waker. As a person that has practically been raised on a boat, I cannot get rid of the feeling of traveling across the water or exploring a coral reef when listening to this soundtrack. The town music also reminds me of simple little seaside towns, with a carefree lifestyle as the people worry about their small problems. Small problems like whether a new outfit will the guy that walks around town.
The music ties in with the art style as well. The pirate theme is dynamic and strong, but has a playful tune. The soundtrack has a light feeling to it, and with such a bright game I don’t think it could be done any better.
Well, with that bit of admiration now finished, I want to know. What is your favorite soundtrack from The Legend of Zelda? Or maybe your favorite voice actor for Link? Favorite creature sound, like “Ooooh?” from the Gorons? This game is full of simple sounds like “DA-DA-DA-DAAAAA!” to openings like Skyloft in Skyward Sword.
On a side note, and bonus little thought. I loved the conductor’s baton in Wind Waker as well, and I wonder now whether it would have been a smart choice in a motion control Zelda?
Also, be sure to check out my upcoming Erica’s Ocarina Experience! I will be sharing how to play Great Fairy Fountain theme!
