Zelda Williams was Teased in School for her Name

School bullying is a problem in highschools all across the country and all across the world really. Often times this happens because of somebody’s pure appearance, sexual orientation, religion or if there is something about them that is different. For Zelda Williams, it was her name, Zelda. Being named after the Princess of Hyrule was no easy way to go through school, as Zelda was constantly teased because of it. Zelda recently spoke about her name and what it was like growing up.
I wonder if this would still happen today? In modern America, it’s becoming part of the culture to be different and to express yourself. While perhaps even as recent as 5-10 years ago being different would be frowned upon, it’s becoming more acceptable and perhaps even preferred in schools today. For this specific example, video games have become mainstream and Nintendo is one of the juggernauts in the business. Now that video games have been embraced by a widespread audience, perhaps this type of thing will become normal and we’ll see more kids named after video games.
When I have children I can only imagine the names we’ll be seeing. I can imagine my kids having friends in school named Samus, Kratos, or other fan favorites. Although I imagine all the names will be the heroes, so I’m not expecting any Ganondorf or Bowsers coming to my door. Anyway, what are your thoughts on the matter? Do you think having a video game name would be something you’d personally embrace? Let us know in the comments below.
