Zelda Versus – Round One: The Minish Cap vs Majora’s Mask
Posted on January 21 2014 by Nathanial Rumphol-Janc
Round one continues with our 6th matchup, featuring
The Minish Cap against Majora’s Mask. The matchup is intriguing simply because it represents our home stretch, with just two round one matchups remaining. Both games have a strong following, and both games are generally considered under-appreciated in their heydays.
The Minish Cap (ゼルダの伝説 ふしぎのぼうし, lit. The Legend of Zelda: The Mysterious Cap)
Released in Japan on November 4th 2004,
The Minish Cap made its way around the world by April the following year. It was the the last of three Zelda games crafted by Capcom and started a bit of timeline controversy due to the potential of the game representing an origin story for Link’s cap. While many consider this game to lean towards the easy side of the Zelda series, it is also fondly remembered for being fun and totally unique. From interacting with the Minish to fighting regular ChuChu’s from a mouse like perspective, this game really changed the landscape of the traditional perspective in the series.
Majora’s Mask (ゼルダの伝説 ムジュラの仮面Zeruda no Densetsu Mujura no Kamen)
Released in Japan on April 27th 2000,
Majora’s Mask found its way around the world by November of that year. Majora’s Mask was a big step away from the traditional Zelda formula, taking place in an alternate dimension and featuring new versions of the same characters met in Ocarina of Time. The game ran on a 3 day repeatable system and featured arguably much more time manipulation than the game’s predecessor. The game had a large focus on side-quests, which lead to a lot of emotional investment into the characters of the world due to the nature of the quests themselves, something very few other Zelda games have attempted to match. What it lacked in dungeons, it made up in character.
