Zelda Universe-25 Years in 25 Days: 2011

2011 was a huge year for The Legend of Zelda. In honor of celebrating the series’ 25th anniversary, Nintendo had many things planned in the form of interviews, concerts, and games. Throughout the last several months we have seen tons of interviews with various people sharing their Zelda memories and what they love about the series. Also, if you were lucky enough to live in Japan, London, or Los Angeles you got to experience the first round of the Legend of Zelda 25th anniversary concert.

2011 also gave fans three Zelda games for the 3DS. Ocarina of Time was remade with stunning new graphics and extra content, Four Swords anniversary edition is available for free until February 2012 through the eShop and includes a new single player mode, and Link’s Awakening was also made available through the eShop. Finally, the event that 2011 brought us that all fans have been waiting for, is the release of Skyward Sword. Now, for the last time with this article series, head over to Zelda Universe to relive all the moments of this 25th anniversary and to share your thoughts.

We could argue forever about whether or not the Nintendo 3DS is doing well and why that is the case. Regardless of how you feel about the Nintendo 3DS, I think everyone agrees that Ocarina of Time 3D looks fantastic running on the platform.

I’ve only had a few brief opportunities to play the new version of Ocarina of Time, but each time I have played the game, I felt like it was 1998 all over again. The game plays just as well as it did 13 years ago, and the game looks absolutely gorgeous.

Unfortunately, nowadays Link’s Awakening is much harder to get your hands on than Ocarina of Time and some of the other better-known entries in the series. Thankfully, Nintendo finally made this masterpiece available again this year as a downloadable title for the Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo released Four Swords: Anniversary Edition for Nintendo DSi and Nintendo 3DS as a free download. It includes the entire original game plus a significant amount of new content. Even better, the game includes a brand new single-player mode.

Skyward Sword is the climax of this year of celebration. It’s the event we’ve all been waiting for and I don’t expect it to disappoint.

Sure, Nintendo could decide several years from now that something else happened before Skyward Sword, but that doesn’t make the events of the game any less significant. Nothing they design in the next 5-10 years could replace the legend that was built over 25 years. How do you replace the significance of the Master Sword, Triforce, and Ganon in such a short amount of time?

Skyward Sword could be one of the most important Legend of Zelda games ever released. Some of you are already experiencing that, and the rest of us will join you soon enough.

I really enjoyed reading these articles from Zelda Universe. I learned a lot about the Zelda series that I might never have known otherwise. With Skyward Sword coming out tomorrow it was great to relive all the moments in history that made the series what it is today. What do you guys think? Did you like the articles? Were there things you learned about Zelda that you didn’t know before? What was the biggest year in Zelda history for you? Tell us in the comments!
