Zelda Marathon: Afro of Time
Posted on June 16 2012 by Legacy Staff
The people here at the Zelda Marathon had way too much fun, I think. There have been prizes and events with each donation to Child’s Play with set goals that the team put together. We made thousands of dollars in donations for Child’s Play. Great job to everyone who donated, children will now have toys of entertainment in their hospital rooms because of you. With acknowledgments done, let’s move on to our main attractions! Take the jump below to see the fun of what went down at this crazy event.
This marathon was a blast! The community went crazy with making pictures of their favorite people with captions all around, pointing out the hilarious moments of the show. Throughout the various goals in the marathon, certain events occurred. For example, after one thousand dollars in donations, the set up and played the game Gyromite.
After about twenty-five hundred dollars in donations, Mases had taken it to himself to shave his afro completely off. These were the results:
I think he looks better without it anyway. Time to go donate that to a wig shop! Meanwhile, only an hour before, Gooey was the infamous master at playing Orcarina of Time all the way through. Many people disagreed with his tactics of playing, though. He went to the “Fire Temple” first, he got his shield from the Market Place, and he didn’t get Epona throughout the entire game. What do the viewers do? They create a meme.
Gooey is never going to live that one down.
Throughout the events of the marathon, Mases never expected it, but he and his afro slowly became a trendy meme. Various Zelda afro titles came about and were posted on the Zelda Dungeon facebook page by many fans. I went through all of them and picked out some of the best to showcase to you here. Check out Mases and the Fro!
Next thing you know, Mases and Gooey, and the majority of this marathon, are going to end up on Know Your Meme.
During the marathon, Mases released The Legend of Zelda Board Game and the staff played it twice. Turns out it wasn’t very exciting, so they quit within fifteen minutes. One of the players described the game as mindless and luck based, as more of a means to pass time, definitely not one of the better Zelda titles.
Back in the box for you, game. Moving on, Twilight Princess was being played at the beginning as a race between Caleb on the GameCube and Trevor on the Wii. However, about an hour and fourty-five minutes in, Trevor’s Wii froze and he had to restart because he refused to save. The poor guy spent the rest of the race trying to catch up to Caleb, which he never did. In fact, by the end, his Wii ended up freezing three times.
A fan created and drew a nice picture of this unfortunate event. Poor Trevor.
At another point in donations, Mases broke out a Zelda “Game Watch” and played a few rounds with it.
The game wasn’t the best to watch, but it was interesting. I never thought Zelda could fit into a watch.
Their second to last game was Skyward Sword, being the longest game they played at the Marathon. One Wii Mote was used the whole time, when a few hours before it ended, the warning notification for the batteries running out popped up on the bottom of the screen. By the end of the show, people were cheering on the batteries to win the game during the many fails at trying to beat Demise.
The batteries stood the test of time and won the battle against Demise with Mosley playing, having probably the least experience with that game compared to the rest of the team.
Now we end off here with another picture of Gooey, with a fan-drawn Link costume, Epona-less like a boss.
As the marathon came to a close, I found myself tearing up due to the loss of something I had. I found that I had been watching it for so long that I had become attached to the stream in an emotional way. Now that I think back on it, though, I know I was just tired. Either way, I must applaud the team for raising over five thousand dollars for Child’s Play Charity and holding probably the best event I’ve ever viewed.
The marathon was a big hit, especially with the fans as they had made so many pictures and supposed memes it was almost hard to keep up with. I know my favorite part, even though it wasn’t covered in this article, was the singing the guys did during various games, it was just too funny. So what do you all think about this? What were your favorite parts, if you watched it? Do you think the team could be the start of some new, hit memes? Could they end up viral because of this? Would Zelda Dungeon get the credit?
